Saints trying to get deal done with Kaesviharn
Bengals free agent safety Kevin Kaesviharn and agent Bruce Tollner have not returned repeated phone calls this week, but word out of New Orleans -- both inside and outside of the Saints office -- is that the Saints are trying to close a deal to bring Kaesviharn into their fold.
The Saints have two young safeties, Josh Bullocks and Bryan Scott, and would like to add Kaesviharn's experience and teaching and playmaking ability into the mix.
Kaesviharn had six interceptions last season, including one in the end zone at New Orleans in the Bengals' 31-16 victory. Kaesviharn had nine total tackles, including 1.5 sacks that day. It was quite a showcase.
On their season-ending depth chart, the Bengals had six safeties listed, including Kaesviharn. The others are starters Madieu Williams and Dexter Jackson, as well as backups Herana-Daze Jones, John Busing and Ethan Kilmer. None of the three backups have any significant NFL defensive experience and have been used primarily on special teams.
Looking ahead to the draft April 28 and 29, when the Bengals pick 18th and 49th in Rounds 1 and 2 -- the do not have a third-round pick -- put safety in the mix for one of those picks in Kaesviharn does leave.
Also, as expected, the Bengals are hoping to restructure the contract of defensive tackle John Thornton in order to gain some salary cap space. With two years remaining on his contract, Thornton is scheduled to make a base of $3.25 million, with another $500,000 reporting bonus, in 2007. With his signing bonus proration, Thornton's salary cap number this year now stands at $4.375 million.
Reports are that Thornton is agreeable to a restructed deal.

i dont get the kk fascination. yeah, he ahd 6 picks. will he do it again?...who knows.
i do know i have seen enough bengals games to know that he is a poor tackler and sure doesnt appear to be more than average in coverage.
how old is the guy too?
i say let him go. if necessary, draft a safety...if you are concerned about jackson and williams durability then get landry or nelson.
the key in the nfl is pay your stars....get young players in at low money (years 1-4) and try to to pay too many of these experienced average players millions of dollars per year. id rather see the bengals try to snag one of these top free agents as opposed to giving landon johnson, caleb miller, kk, etc. big contracts when they are simply average players at best.
I don't want to see them lose Special K. The Bengals should receive a 3rd pick compensation pick for losing Steinbach. Hopefully they get comp picks for losing Simmons and Special K when he leaves.
Thorton would be wise to restructure the deal and grab some guaranteed bonus money during his last few years in the league.
We can only hope that Kasevaharn leaves, that guy is TERRIBLE, what is with the media making it sound he is a perenial pro-bowler? A rookie with no NFL experience would do ten times better than that weak hitting, slow, ineffective, sorry excuse for a safety. Just to check, wasn't he playing regularly on the 30th ranked defense last year? Thats what I thought.
Mark, I read something on si.com and wanted to know if you could confirm/deny it. Basically that the Bengals are considering moving Madieu to corner. Have you heard any talk of this in the organization? Any news you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.
KK was a stud for the Bengals last year and closed the deal on a couple of games, but when it boils down, he probably isn't worth the money the Saints are willing to offer. With Williams and Carter as starters, the Bengals should be fine.
As for the draft, it really doesn't matter who leaves or stays. The motto has pretty much been 'take the best player available' (except QB) and I think that is what we will see.
...and I hate all these mock drafts, they are always so wrong it isn't even funny.
Kaes is better than the guy who will take his place.
I'm not sure losing KK is that big of a deal. I think our backups are almost as good as him, and with another years experience, they could be better. I was especially impressed with the play of Dusing during the preseason. The guy is big and can hit and tackle much better than Kaesviharn. And Coach Lewis seems to like safeties who can stop the run, which is Dusing's specialty.
