Reggie Kelly will stay with Bengals for three more years

Tight end Reggie Kelly said a late-afternoon phone call from quarterback Carson Palmer convinced him to take less money to stay with the Bengals.

Kelly said he would be staying in Cincinnati for three more years and that he left "a lot of money on the table" in Atlanta, Arizona and Oakland to remain a Bengal.

"That will be seven years with my hall-of-fame quarterback," Kelly told The Enquirer this evening.

Kelly and Palmer's locker-room cubicles are side by side. Palmer has called Kelly the best teammate he has ever had in football. Less than an hour after the Bengals lost in overtime to the Steelers on Dec. 31 to end the season, Palmer lobbied in his post-game news conference for the team to re-sign Kelly and third-down back Kenny Watson. Watson signed a three-year deal Friday night to return to the Bengals. They are the team's only two free-agent signings since free agency started Friday.

"To be honest, the deciding factor was our quarterback," Kelly said. "He gave me a call and told me how much he wanted me to come back."

Asked what Palmer told him, Kelly said, "He explained how important I was to his offense. He told me I was a large ingredient to our success. He said he wanted me back for football but also for leadership. (Palmer) is a great quarterback and a great teammate and he has a future as a lawyer."

Agent Jimmy Sexton told a Bengals employee that the deal is worth a total of $9 million. The salary information was posted tonight on the team-owned and controlled Web site.

That's great news. Glad to see Carson step up and be a leader off the field as well. I like this signing much better than throwing $20 million at Joey Porter.

It took a lot more than $20M to get Porter. I'm glad that we didn't get him and happy that Reggie will return.

Great job Carson. However, I think the person who should be praised most is Kelly. A perfect example of why he's considered "one of the best teammates". Agreed, this is a much better move than throwing money at Porter.

I'm not mistaken, Carson took less money than he would've made otherwise under the premise that it would help re-sign guys like Kelly. Maybe that was the crux of his pitch to him.

What is up with " the team owned and controlled website" line? Is there some animosity towards Bengals.com?

There should be a lot "up" with it, when that site masquerades as independant media when they are not. Keep on fighting that fight, Mark.

Every business has their own website. Why shouldnt the Bengals? Get over it.

How does it masquerade as anything? It is pretty apparent what it is and that is the teams website. It provides a good souce of information that I'm sure Mark uses from time to time himself. If Mark doesn't like it then start his own.

By the way I'm gald Kelly is coming back.

Please explain how they are masquerading. Cleary the site states Bengals.com so it is the team's website. If Mark doesn't like it then he can start his own. I'm sure he has used the site himself. It contains more useful information than any other sites.

I'm guessing that line "team owned and controlled website" is there because the Enquirer probably doesn't want him mentioning "competing" websites by name.

Just a territorial thing. I could be wrong.

Sounds like someone's feelings are offended because another reporter worked harder to get the info first; frankly we fans don't care who reports the facts, just as long as we get them. High fives to bengals.com for being on top of this one

Yes, it is nice to resign Kelly as he is an excellent run blocker. But for 3 million dollars to block on running plays? He comes out when the Bengals go 3 wide receivers. Shouldn't they have used the cap space provided by releasing Simmons to address the defense?? They could have found a cheaper run blocking tight end.

Bengals re-signed Reggie Kelly......big deal! Another 8-8 year as long as Mikey boy is in charge.
