Interesting take on free Agency by Prisco of CBS.Sportsline.com. Its kind of true; free agency is a bit overrated.

So fans, let's be patient.

Can you just post the "We can't sign any free agents in 2008, because we signed Robert Geathers last year" column now and save everyone the trouble??

Mike Brown said he won't give me a raise because of the cap hit. He said he can either backload my $.50 an hour raise to 2012 or give me a Kevin Hardy replica jersey at the discounted price of 29.99 via the shopzone website.

Let me see if I understand? We are losing three veterans; a DB,OG and a LB and now we should be happy we are signing second tier players.
How are we improving exactly, when we are not adding? So, how do you think we would do against New England or Indy....that's what I thought!

You are the same ones that complain that Sam Adams was a waste of money...which he was. They are developing a team and they will be better because the young guys have played more and will get more playing time.

10:31, Maybe I can help you "understand" a little bit. You improve in a variety of different ways, not simply signing a bunch of new guys, nor in resigning all of you own guys. sometimes, you improve because your competition fails to hod on to a playmaker of their own, a la Adalius Thomas, and to a degree, Joey Porter. Our division as a whole is weaker at this point with the defections of these two players. You also improve sometimes through adversity, like the fact that last year's many injuries put a lot of 2nd and 3rd string players on the field for extended periods of time. That translates into experience for those players, and also gives the coaches a good look at these guys in game situations.
You also improve by drafting smartly for the future. That is how NE has done it; that is the Pittsburgh model as well. If at all possible, before a player has played himself into a salary level you are not comfortable paying him, you make sure his replacement(s) are ready to go, a la Whitworth and Andrews for Steinbach. Is it a loss the Eric went to the Browns? sure. But don't pretend that there is no one capable of playing his position already on the roster. As for losing Tory James, last season they could have put a cardboard cutout of Tory James out there and gotten just as good an effort in pass defense, excepting that the cardboard cutout would probably be more mobile. Simmons is a great guy, a great team player, and a great community guy. I am surprised by the move too, but in part I think it is a vote of confidence from the coaches in Rashad Jeanty and Ahmad Brooks. remember the comments some in the league were making about Brooks when we drafted him. Lots of folks are very high on the talent he has. Jeanty played a monster roll last year, really stepping up when Pollack went down. Again, will they miss simmons? probably. Will it devastate them? doubt it. Would Joey Porter have helped more than he would have hurt? At the price he went for, I don't think he would have been worth it. He's still a punk, and he's lost a half step by most accounts, so if I had to pick between guys who lst a half step, I'd rather keep Simmons.
