Bengals don't match Browns for DT Shaun Smith
The Bengals just announced today that they have declined to match the offer made by the Cleveland Browns to defensive tackle Shaun Smith.
Smith was one of Cincinnati’s restricted free agents. He played in 13 games last season, with 14 tackles and a pass defensed. He was inactive for the final three games.
Cleveland's offer sheet reportedly is a multi-year contract worth about $8 million.
"We wish Shaun well with his new opportunity," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement released by the team's public relations office. "For our offseason and future planning, we have chosen to allocate our cap resources in a different direction."
Since free agency started two weeks ago today, the Bengals have lost safety Kevin Kaesviharn (Saints), wide receiver Kelley Washington (Patriots), tight end Tony Stewart (Raiders), linebacker Marcus Wilkins (Falcons) and guard Eric Steinbach (Browns). They were unrestricted free agents. On Feb. 28, the Bengals terminated the contract of nine-year veteran linebacker Brian Simmons, who signed with New Orleans.
The Bengals have re-signed tailback Kenny Watson and tight end Reggie Kelly, both unrestricted free agents.

Shaun Smith should fit right in with the Clowns. A do nothing on the field player and a do nothing on the field team, the Cleveland Clowns.
Clearly, the Bengals are planning on having open try-outs for locals to fill in these open roster spots.
That must be what Marvin means by "allocate our cap resources in a different direction."
If other teams are interested in Smith why not resign him then trade him to guarantee we get something in return considering we don't recieve anything for this except for a more depleted team.

That would be in the direction of Mike Brown's bank account.
Amazing that he is going to start pulling this again.
Even more amazing that so many people will sit back and let him get away with it.
8 million for Shaun Smith?!?!?!?!?!? Do they need an out-of-shape 6'1 230lb for anything? Only 26 with no game milage on me! I'm available, no agents to deal with.
The Alex Stepanovich signing is interesting. Is it a battle between Stepanovich and Wilkerson for the 2nd string center or is Stepanovich going to get a chance to battle for the starting spot?
Free Agent: "I'm thinking of the Bengals."
Wife/Mom" "Not a chance!"
Reading between the lines re Kaesviharn & Stewart... or not so between? They indicated that the off-field crap did play a small role in their decisions. If two guys who LOVED the Bengals, say that...
(Marc- a story idea??)
Lets look at the reality of the situation, they Bengals are playing a value game and making good choices.
Kaesviharn - way too much for a backup at safety.
Washington - way too much for a fifth receiver.
Stewart - decent #2 TE, but easily replaced in the draft or free agency.
Wilkens - not a big loss
Steinbach - great player, but Cleveland overpaid for him.
Smith - $8 million, lol, Cleveland is screwing up their cap.
Speaking of Cleveland, they are doing everything possible to make a run at it this year. Crennel is feeling the heat after going 0-6 in the division. They are not building for the future, they are building for today.
Cleveland did NOT give this guy 8 million dollars. The dollars were not announced, but it wasn't no 8 million dollars. Shaun Smith was signed cause he fits more into a 3-4 defensive scheme as opposed to a 4-3 scheme which the ben-gals run. I think that the ben-gals were leaning towards running a 3-4, but with the injury to Pollack they decided against it. Smith has the weight and height and talent to be a backup to Ted Washington till they (Cleveland) can draft someone to fill his spot in a year or two.
Another dumb move by the Pseudo-Browns. (the real Browns franchise now plays in Baltimore).

His contract is for 4 years and is worth $8.65 million and he could make up to $11 million if all his incentives are met. The Browns also gave him a 2.3 million dollar signing bonus.
