Report: Geathers to sign six-year extension

The Bengals are expected to announce today that they have signed defensive end Robert Geathers to a six-year contract extension.

Geathers had 10.5 sacks this past season and was the first Bengals player since Alfred Williams in 1992 to reach double-digits in that category.

Geathers will receive a reported $14 million in the first year and as much as $33.7 million over the life of the deal if he reaches all incentive clauses, according to ESPN.com.

The Bengals had no comment late today on the report, and Geathers' agent could not be reached to confirm the contract.

good signing. $14 million is a bit much. but he's got a ton of potential. I just want to know who else is out there in free agency? I really like Justin Smith and hope they can work something out with him. Great work ethic and attitude. Non-stop motor. I would LOVE to pick up Adalius from the Ravens. He would be an instant upgrade.

I think Geather's is a good player, but I don't think he is a great player. This kind of money is a little bit ridiculous for someone such as Geather's. It's not like he is an All-Pro. I definitely think Smith should have seen this money since he is an every down player and now I doubt the Bengals will pay Smith as well.

Without Smith on the other side taking a lot of attention, Geather's won't get as many sacks.

He could potentially be a all-pro.Ten and a half sacks is alot for someone whos doesn't play every down.A lot of people don't realize that.Given a chance to play every down this year, he could have had 15-20 sacks.I like Justin Smith but, to me he is more of First or second down player, not that great of a pass rusher.I always thought that he could have been a great linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He never quits on a play.He reminds me alot of a Greg Lloyd type linebacker and probably been all-pro if they used him that way.
