Post-game quotes, notes

The Bengals won 35-6 over Tennessee.

"I think that's the best football game we played all season," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "We had good football plays in all three phases."

On what he told wide receiver Chad Johnson after his 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which followed Johnson's first touchdown catch since Week 2: "I understand."

Johnson had three touchdown catches. But Johnson didn't talk to the media, other than his paid appearance on the local Fox affiliate.

"We all needed today," Lewis said of the thorough victory.

As he looks ahead with a 4-7 record to Sunday night at Pittsburgh, Lewis said, "There is no secret ... no quick fix. We're not going to re-invent it ... it's not drawings on paper."

The Bengals had possession for 38:30.

Tennessee was 2 of 10 on third down offensively.

The Bengals were 14 of 18 on third down.

The Titans had five red-zone possessions and scored no touchdowns. They were goal-to-go three times and had no touchdowns.

The Bengals were 5 of 6 in the red zone.

On the other side, Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said of the game, "I certainly didn't see that coming."

Of Carson Palmer, who threw three touchdowns, "I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback manage a game as well as he did."

Palmer was 32-for-38 passing for 282 yards and three touchdowns. His passer rating was 113.0. The completion percentage of 84.2 is a single-game career high. The previous best was 81.8 at Tennessee in 2005.

Where are all the bloggers from last week that asked for Palmer to be benched?

Their lack of football knowledge was made clear by Carson's great game today.

Congratulations to Carson, and the Bengals. Best all around game for the team this season. When things are at there worst, as most of this season has been, true character is tested. Today, the Bengals showed they have it. Now, let's see if they can get on a roll.

It's time for a steam-roll and 9-7 into the playoffs.

The Bengals outplayed the Cardinals last week in a loss. With the Baltimore victory and today, they've really been playing well overall the past three weeks. Too little, too late.

If it isn't obvious by now, most of the complaining blowhards on the blogs aren't very intelligent fans, but rather interweb flamers.

You can see how fair weathered they are by reading the Reds blogs, they want Castellini to spend money then cry when he signs the best free agent reliever in the game.

Here we go again. Over most of the past 10 years, when the pressure of being a playoff team is gone. The Bengals play like contenders, getting all the fans "ready for next year", only to be dealt the same hand again next year. Don't get sucked into non-playoff contending success again. Assistant coaching requires overhaul.

Did anyone else feel like Bill Cowher was campaigning for the Bengals job and Booger Esiason was his campaign manager, during the CBS halftime show and post game talks. They spoke as if the Bengals lost. I believe Booger's (Not a misspelling, his name is officially booger) exact quote was, "I betcha this Coach (referencing to Cowher) wouldn't let Chad get away with it." It might have been small but there was something to it. And the nerve of him to act as if his support of Marvin Lewis was warranted or somehow held some weight. News flash to Booger: You are a has been and always have been. Superbowl 88 was a long time ago. You do not hold a front office position in the organization and no one cares what you think. Now that you are on TV, you are nothing more than a talking head that has an open forum to spew his B.S. Where was your fervor for the Bengals when they were losing, oh you were quiet back then. I don't remember you criticizing Lebeau or Coslet. What I do remember is you walkig out on the Bengals after I believe the 97 season, when you led us on a somewhat winning streak down the stretch. The mike brown asked you back and you said no. You left. And since you left then, please remain gone. You walked out on this team when we needed you. You used to be my favorite player but TV has made you a self-centered, entitled bafoon. You talk about Chad's look at me antics but what about your own: every time you attack Chad, it is a way to get attention to yourself.

5:27 The Titans are knocked out of playoff contention with 5 games to go ?? Your a idiot but don't worry... Your Clowns will lose in PB stadium as well, Shortly before NE or INDY ruins all that your team built during the year with a 51-3 pasting in the playoffs.. Typical Browns fan who only shows up when they win more then 6 games a year..

We knew we would string together some wins just to torture us all in the offseason how we should have beat KC, Cards and Browns.... We'll finish 8-8 or 7-9. In fairness, injuries were brutal. Our D still needs ALOT of help.

You don't bench someone like Palmer, but every criticism of him was valid. He wasn't doing his job -- not producing drives and not getting the ball in the end zone. That IS what he is paid for. Leadership derives from performance, making things positive happen, getting the first down on third downs, and ACHIEVING REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS. Palmer should produce points and pull out last drive victories (the latter something he's failed at each opportunity this year). These are points that make winning teams and EVERY Bengal fan should expect Palmer to make this team a winner.

I'm a realist - this team won't make the playoffs. However, it would be nice to see them go on a roll and shut up everyone that has ripped them this year. I'd be happy with an 8-8 finish with the year we've had.

Too little, too late.

Not surprising that this team waits until they are completely out of the playoff picture to play a good game. I just hope no one gets hurt from patting themselves on the back.

It should be an automatic suspension if you do something stupid like Chad did and you have a losing record. It would have been funny if we were 7-4 but at 4-7 it's just pathetic, look-at-me, selfishness.

I don't know about you but I've seen some kind of improvement on deffense over the last three games. J.Joseph had a great game yesterday, not to mention L.Johnson who need to go out to get some stitches and come back. Offense played better than last week. The Bengals have the weapons to be a really good team but they need to be consistent, like in this game. Too late though, too late. 9-7 will be. I think we beat the steelers if we keep playing like this.

Very few people comment on what Chad Johnson did that was admirable and productive. A back-of-the-end-zone, two-feet-down catch for a TD, and leaving his defender with his pants down on the last touchdown. Remarkable. If we spent more time ENCOURAGING GOOD BEHAVIOR and not remarking on questionable behavior, we'd see more of it.

The Bengals remaining opponents are 19 and 35, the two winners being conference rivals Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Sunday night is the waterloo for the Bengals. The Steelers will have a short week after playing a cupcake football team in Miami. The Bengals should be able to take advantage and have all offensive cylinders running.

If they beat Pittsburgh and Cleveland, as they should, they are 6-5 in the conference. If they win out, as they should, they are 9-7. For an injury-prone season, I'll take it. Get real people. Marvin made the moves (D.D. Dorsey, others) to band-aid fix things mid seasons. Truth be told, we had a hard time recovering from a Monday night win over Baltimore. Look at the close wins following. It's just been a tough season. Real fans know this.

Great job Chad. Way to score for the first time since week 2. We're all proud of the great season you're being paid millions of dollars to have.

Pitt will lose against Miami tonight. Too much odds are on Pitt in Vegas and an upset is in the works.

9:21,

Fans like you have made the Brown family wealthy. They too will be happy with 8-8 season.

Because they know that you will be there for them next year as well, dont expect any significant changes during the off-season. Same old same old.

I agree with this assertion. After 10 weeks it looks like they offense and defense are finally jelling.

Hey, I was one of those bloggers who said bench him last week and I still stand by what I said. The man stunk period and all of your trying to scold fans for what they feel is lame at best. You're the one with little football knowledge.

Mike, are you going a little overboard with the playoffs thing? They've won 4 games and the only team that they've beaten with a winning record has a given up more points than they've scored. A team with a negative like that is not a true playoff team.

There could be some merit to what you are saying. Perhaps it may have something to do with pressure or lack of pressure in games but for this season I think the team came out of preseason and was not truly ready to play.

Sure they got up for the Baltimore game but now we we have to wonder how good Baltimore really is.

I agree there has been an improvement on defense although I still see Joseph as being a liability out there. I think some of it may be attributable to having a fixed lineup on defense. If you'll recall the defense started playing better around the same time that they put LBs on the injured reserve list. May it's coincidence but it is strange that they started playing better.

I guess with the game yesterday the real test will come this week against Pittsburgh. Remember that Cincy has beat only one team with a winning record and they have not played very well on the road.

An interesting fact about the Bengals / Pittsburgh game is that the schedule has sort of favored the Bengals for most of the games this season. I think that they've had one short week to deal with but I recall that they've caught a lot of teams on short weeks.

They will face Pittsburg after Pitt plays on a Monday night and I think they've faced at least two other teams on short weeks.

Hope I'm wrong but this a perfect setup:
- Bengals are back in the "we can beat anyone" mindset & Pittsburgh was embarassed against Miami and will be hot.

I look for the Steelers to end Bengals 9-7 dream.

Anyone who said Carson Palmer should be benched is an idiot, anyone who thinks the Bengals would be better off without Chad Johnson is an idiot.

Anyone who thinks that up until this Sunday, both of them haven't been quite themselves....they would be dead on.
