Quote of the night
Marvin Lewis lit into his team after the 34-13 loss Monday night to New England.
"If you don’t want to be on the team, don’t show up at 4 o’clock,” Lewis yelled in a profanity-laced, locker-room tirade toward his Bengals players. He dropped the f-bomb a couple of times.
The Bengals have a 4 p.m. team meeting today.
The Bengals, buried in last place in the AFC North, dropped to 1-3 and lost for the sixth time in the past seven games, dating to the three-game losing streak that ended 2006.
"I’m just as upset, obviously, as I can be,” a subdued Lewis said in his post-game news conference. “Right now, we’re finding a way to play not well enough to win. We’re going to see who we’re going to fight with. If we have to make changes, we’ll make changes."

Hey everyone, lighten up! New England is a great team. But for a few moments of confusion, this would have been a tight game.
It's about time! Light em up Marvin! It's not just them on the line - you're there too. Without a PLAYOFF WIN, you might be done here. There are a lot of coaches who would love a chance at having Carson/Chad/TJ/Co. on their team.
Do YOUR job, Marvin - Light this team up!
A loss at KC is bad - really bad - for you...
Well, that's some news. The only thing more disappointing than the past few weeks of losses has been the inevitable media silence and lack of accountability from the team.
Having two functioning linebackers for the majority of this game is a reasonable excuse, but I'm glad to see that, as of yet, it isn't being used.
Nevertheless, the team doesn't need the threat of change; they need actual change. How many more losses can they weather before deciding that something needs to be done about it?
We have had a lot of injuries, suspensions, etc. So what! It is time for Marvin to stop with the 'quotes' and start producing.
If we weren't a complete embarrassment before he arrived, he would be looking for another job.
Marvin, that 4 pm ultimatium goes for you too! (just a little later in the year). Playoffs or go away!!
0 and 7 on third down for the Bengals' offense and 7 for 12 for New England's offense. Until the Bengals figure out how to stop rolling over on 3rd down we should expect more of the same loss after loss. The team tried hard and never game up but 3rd down continues to take the wind out of the team, coaches and fans.
After this year Marvin will have had five years and zero playoff wins. He should be fired. The team is as bad now as it was under Lebeau, and only one of the talented players was drafted by Lewis (Carson Palmer).
they need some help on defense, tryouts start tomorrow
I can't believe that we put 12 men on defense to *start* the fourth quarter! We had a full three minutes between quarters to get things straightened out before a really important 3rd and short for the Patriots. At some point, this becomes more than a personnel issue -- it becomes a coaching issue. Lewis and company need to start taking some heat for poor game-time coaching decisions.
It's so typical of Bengals fans to lose their heads and act like injuries aren't valid excuses for poor play. Anthony Schlegal started at MLB for us tonight! When Marvin did it in Baltimore he put Ray Lews in the middle and he anchored the whole team. The Bengals have never had that player and still lack a defensive identity because of it. (thanks, Odell).
Seriously, consdier the list of players who couldn't play due to injury

When the Bengals won 11 games a few years ago, they were remarkably healthy. This team has been remarkably unhealthy. That's the way it goes.
Calling for Marvin's head is insane. Who do you want to replace him? Look at San Diego. They switched coaches and have gone backward. If we have to weather a tough stretch so be it. Marvin is still the right guy for the job.
In closing, the true disappointment of tonight was not Marvin Lewis, but Chad Johnson. I felt like it was three years ago watching him yell at carson after the INT. he is so freaking fragile out there; he looked scared to death before the kickoff when the camera showed his face. The Patriots are the standard bearers, in large part because they don't scream at each othe when something goes awry. I don't think Carson started it. I think Chad always starts it. So I hope he grows up a bit, turns down the theatrics, and pus team ahead of self, something I don't think he's ever truly done.
Be of good spirit, Bengals fans. All is not lost. The rest of the schedule is much easier.
Isn't this the 3rd best offense in the league? Why is Brat taking all the heat? This offense sucks. The colts and pats are putting up points at will. This offense is every bit as confused as the defense. Let's face it, a below average football team. Talent on the field is good...Talent on the sidelines is definitely lacking. Name a coach with more weapons and less to show for it. You can't.
Marvin, what have you done? One playoff game? It's pretty sad that 8-8 has risen you to a demigod in this city. Mike Brown finally opened his pocketbook, gave someone the tools and 0 to show for it. Can't wait for the next 20 years of .500 or worse. Roger Goodell, please contract this team as the embarrassment will only continue.
The defense was pretty bad, but I feel like the offense really let the team down the most tonight.
With all the injuries at Linebacker, and as good as New England is, you knew the D would give up probably 30 points.
But I thought maybe the offense would keep them in the game.
Carson Palmer did not have a very good game, but I guess Peyton Manning use to always stink against the Patriots too. I think if the Bengals played the Pats every year they would eventually break through and beat them.
As for Marvin's tirdade...I don't know if he has ever had control of this team.
I love Chad Johnson but I've always thought that his immaturity was going to eventually hurt the Bengals.
Marvin has lost the respect of his players. Year after year it's the same thing! No defense
When Columbus landed in the new world, after a while he faced the whinning of his men. So what did he do? He burned the ships to get them to focus on their task at hand.
There can only be one leader in the huddle. Carson. His word is law, and when he says jump, everyone should ask how high. Chad is lucky to have someone like him. If I were Carson, I would of grabbed him by the face mask and slapped him all around the stadium.
The only leader that is above Carson is Lewis. I think his words in his post game interviewed were focused on Chad.
Now for the Tom-Foolery of replacing Lewis.
Have we lost our mind? Do you remember what the Bengals record was the year before Lewis came? 2-14. So I don't want to hear any more nonsense about Lewis.
This is the same kind of nonsense that some people were mouthing of about Peyton Manning and how he could never win a playoff game, or how he could never win in the cold, or beat New England, or blah blah blah, and now those same "geniuses" have christened him the best QB of all time.
So get a backbone people, put on your hardhats, and dig in, because its going to be a hard season.
The list of injuries is somewhere between horrific and tragic. We have not punt return team personnel, no punt or kick coverage personnel, we are out of linebackers (brother, can you spare an LB?) we have lost our starting RB, and our O-Line has more trick joints that a Chinese circus ensemble.
Don't be like the Steeler whiner fans, show some backbone and support your coach who took us out of the dessert and into the playoffs, if only for a couple of brief Carson plays....
Looks like the opportunity for tickets to an '07 NFL game in Cincinnati opened up for fans who don't own season tickets. '08 starting to look good too. PB stadium should be awash in yellow and black by the time the steelers come to town. That's O.K., Mike Brown always did admire the Pittsburgh fans. Steelers crush Browns. Browns beat Bengals. Steelers ________ Bengals. (Fill in the blank.)
No the rest of the schedule isn't much easier. A little easier but it won't matter much. Out of KC, Jets, Pittsburgh and Arizona the Bengals might win ONE.
Might. Sure injuries are a much larger factor this year but why didn't Lewis explode after the damn Cleveland game?
And who gets to yell at Lewis for his own wasting of time outs, his teams overly conservative (10-15 yard dink passes) offense?
The coaching, scouting, conditioning, play-calling, clock-management, and execution by the players are all a mess. Everyone seems disheartened, confused, and frustrated (as they should be).
Why is Carson Palmer suddenly unable to hit a receiver on the numbers? He can find their hands or a spot 6 feet above their heads play after play.
After all these years, to have the Bengal quality so lacking on so many fronts means that it's time for Lewis to go.
Anyone looking forward to pitchers and catchers reporting in February?
I am, the Bengals stink even more than the damn Reds!
"Great teams overcome adversity"
C. Noll - 4 time Lombardi Trophy winner
Ain't going to happen here. Too many selfish players, and coaches who have lost control of the team. Lots of warm bodies with no idea of what is going on. Many on the field, and some on the sidelines too.
The real quote was Tirico's " Once again, the last place Cincinnati Bengals".
On the other page some loon wrote "there is still hope"
Yes, there is still hope, for KC and the Jets when they play the Bengals.
This is a lost season. Thank you again O'Dell Thurman and Chris Henry, for being such mature, responsible, un-arrogant men who respect the law and their fellow teammates.
At least with those two the Bengals would probably be 2-2...
Yes, NE is a far better organization and team. Some of the reasons why have to do with Mike Brown's inability to run a club and Marvin Lewis's inability to do ALL the things great coaches do.
He's good at some aspects, terrible at others. But to his credit, he can't throw the ball for the inaccurate Palmer, who has looked pretty bad at times this year.
Even without the injuries, the Bengals have the worst defense, and some of the worst coaches, in the entire NFL backed up by one of the proven worst front-offices in all of football.
The big offense fooled many of us for years (into thinking this was a team on the verge of returning to the Super Bowl) but I think now we are seeing clearly, those of us who KNOW that, for this season, there's no hope at all to finish any better than 6-10 or so.
That will be at least 3 wins out of playoff position. So while the faithful should root and support our team, realistically speaking, we don't have the players or the coaches to get to the playoffs this year.
Seeing clearly, it wasn't all a head-coaching problem after-all. Lewis can only do so much with Brown's organization. Until Mike Brown sells the team, it's looking a lot like the OTHER chronic loser in town.
The buck stops at the top. Lewis can only do so much too. Year in and year out, with all the offensive firepower this team has, the play-calling is usually stupidly over-conservative, and the drafting and free-agent signings leave us thin and slow on Defense (not to mention those defensive guys we lost to free agency).
That's Mike Brown's fault. He's an awful "football man." He never has "gotten it" and never will.
There is no organization in the NFL that does LESS with so many offensive weapons.
There have been few NFL teams that have, year-in and year-out, messed up their drafts--the Bengals seldom if ever grade out at "A" for the draft and usually make a mess of it.
The injury to Irons was obviously unforeseeable but next year the entire draft needs to be DEFENSIVE--guys who can play right away. Our offensive line problems should be solved via free-agency.
I hate to say it but Ocho Stinko needs to be dangled as trade bait for some defensive players this year if the Bengals are going to turn it around...but what team in the NFL has defenders to spare?
Defense in the NFL is like pitching in MLB, rare and rarer to find quality available starters.
If it weren't for the injuries, Lewis and Brown would be fully exposed as one of the more inept duos in the NFL. Still, with TJ and Johnson able to beat most DBs on any given play, why Palmer is throwing mostly 10-20 yards and not 30-40 yards is beyond me.
This team needs to get more vertical, because the defense is going to stink all year long.
That's the only slim chance the Bengals have of winning more than maybe 1 or 2 more games this season.
Can you say First Pick of the 2008 Draft? I knew you could!
4:35 anon and the rest of you that still support this team... as I once did...
TAKE AWAY CARSON PALMER AND THIS TEAM IS JUST AS BAD AND MAKES JUST AS MANY MISTAKES AS THE TEAMS DID UNDER LEBEAU..SHULA..AND COSLETT.
Marvin is telling us the exact same things he told us 5 years ago. And if I hear Willie Anderson say...again, for the 100th time that "we need to be men" I am going to throw up.
what a mess
Yippee! Marvin yelled at the players.
Things will get better now!
When can I buy playoff tickets?
Obviously, the team is terrible. We have a great QB, and his career is being wasted with an organization that will never know how to win. Yes, Mike Brown, that means you. Yes, Marvin, that means you.
Pehaps the greatest problem with Cincinnati football is a press corps that will not tell us the truth. Surely, the press can offer greater insight into the real problems confronting the team. Instead, we get a whitewashed bengals.com approach to the team. The Enquirer, for some reason, will not report the truth. What influence does the Brown family have on the Enquirer?

Looks like the #1 draft pick next year is going to be a linebacker.
i love justin smith wondering out loud 'doesn't it seem like our plays never work?'
doesn't he realize part of the reason they don't work is b/c he gets blocked 9 out of 10 times? what a joke.let somebody else have his overrated, underweight 'big motor' and we'll spend our $8 million somewhere else. what a bunch of losers.

Waaaaah...injuries! Waaaaaah....bad coaching! Time for the excuses to stop and for your pathetic Bengals to start producing. There is *no* way the Bengals could have made this a tight game--they were pushed around at will by a superior team.
There is something off about Carson Palmer. He isn't making good throws this year. I know he has a knack for overthrowing receivers that is quite Favre-ian, but he is missing some easy, open throws this year.
I agree whole heartedly with the poster who made the Lewis-Turner link. Marvin made a no brainer for his first pick (Palmer) who has legit been the reason for the turn around. He is a .500 coach at best. Time for him to go. Mike Brown, please put up big time money for someone like Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer to coach this team. Also, for the love of God Almighty, get a GM in here.
After reading some of the insane comments on this blog today (and after every other game this year), let me, as someone who lives in this area but is not a native or a Bengals fan, try and add a little perspective.
The Bengals, and their fans, are frustrated right now because they allowed themselves to believe that they were a much, MUCH better team than they actually were, and are. After an 11-5 season (during which their non-division schedule included the teams from a VERY mediocre NFC North), the fans, players, and media all went nuts about the Bengals. They were the next great story in the NFL. Carson Palmer's knee injury was just a speed bump on his way to the Hall of Fame, Chad Johnson was Jerry Rice/Lynn Swann/Michael Irvin all in one package, Marvin Lewis was the next Bill Belichick. And then reality set in. The Bengals couldn't count on the other team turning the ball over 3-4 times every game, and you don't get to play a 3rd or 4th place schedule every year.
Face it, folks. What you have this year is who and what the Bengals are. They are NOT an elite team in the NFL, or even in the AFC. They are a team with some nice pieces, primarily on offense, a head coach who is once again proving to the NFL that being a great coordinator doesn't mean you'll be a great head coach, and the ugliest uniforms in pro sports (Sorry, couldn't resist that one). Once you start evaluating the Bengals honestly, maybe your frustration level will decrease. Get a grip, folks.
Hey, Cinci, how does my behind look from there?
Regards,
Cleveland
Geesh. Some of you Bengals fan bloggers are just lost, confused, and delusional.
Firstly, after 5 years under Marvin Lewis, the Bengals still suck. No playoff wins. Period. Marvin is NOT the right man for the job.
Secondly, some of you have been talking about how the rest of the schedule is "easier"... Just like the year the Bengals won 11 or 13 games, whatever it was. They had a gravy schedule that year... And what happened? Playoff LOSS... Once they had to play a good team, they got smoked. You can have a great record, but if all you're beating is gravy teams, you have still proven nothing...not to mention this team lost to the Browns! And the only team the Bengals beat this year is the Ravens, who aren't exactly lighting it up out there.
Marvin has never had control of this team, and he never will. He is not a strong enough leader to handle the immature players that make up the Bengals.
I won't even go into Mike "The Curse of the Bengals" Brown...
This is a bad football team. Don't sugarcoat the facts. It appears as though Marvin is on the brink of losing the respect of the team(if he ever had it). The offense is one-dimensional, special teams are below average, and the defense is last in the league. The numbers don't lie. While all this goes on, Chad worries about his self-promotion and throws a temper tantrum on the sidelines yelling at the QB. Seems to me # 85 is a team player when it suits him.
Marty Schottenheimer is available. Say what you want about the guy, but he wins. He has a winning record with several teams and he could get this bunch of cry-babies whipped into shape.
If Carson Palmer, instead of leading up to the game focusing on that the Patriots weren't the team they'd hope to be playing at this stage, would have stepped forward with a premier effort like premier players do, the result could have been drastically different despite a depleted linebacker corps that wasn't playing well anyway. The defense gave effort each down, even after beaten. However, the offense didn't even put forth a game plan to assert itself. End of half and first possession of second half, Carson puts up TDs like he did vs. Colts couple years ago, we're talking game. The plan wasn't there.
Mr. Anonymous at 2:18am and JerBear...
Chad's so-called immaturity is not the reason this team is 1-3. So what if Chad didnt talk to the media after the game...would you?
Where is the criticism of TJ? TJ is the one who comes screaming off the field yelling at Marvin. I think we'd be surprised to learn that Marvin's comments probably were not directed at Chad...but rather TJ.
It's funny how all coaches love Chad...Cowher, Belicheat, and Marvin loves him...sticks up for him in the media...but then the minute the team is 1-3..."ohh, it's Chad...he's immature."
Give me a break.
The offense is sooooooo overrated! On paper their are world beaters. On the field they are an average NFL offensive unit.
If I hear Carson Plamer is an elite quaterback one more time i'll puke. He's never won. He's no much better than 3/4's of the QB's in the league. Elite? Try Tom Brady. Or Peyton Manning. Or Farve. Palmer will never will be an elite QB
As a lifelong Bengals fan, this has got to be the worst defense I can remember (under a defensive genius). Our only hope is to pray for a penalty or an offensive mistake. If not, it is TD EVERYTIME.
We have 3 good players and 1 in regressing (Carson).
Also, our talent is poor. Leon Hall couldn't start for LSU. He got beat by 5 yards on a 12 yard pass? How is that possible? Is that selfish, or is the fact that he runs a 4.9 40 the issue? Great drafting history Lewis.
Hey Cincinnati -- Checking in from New England to see if how ridiculous the praise for the Pats was by the MNF guys, especially in the second half. I thought it was way overboard and I'm a Patriots fan.
Marty Schottenheimer rules, Marv Lewis drools.
Apart from Carson Palmer, Chris Henry, TJ Chad and Rudi, this could be a mid 1980s 2-14 quality club.
Mike Brown is the worst owner in the history of the NFL. Go away Mike, and stay away, you loser!
Wait, what's that I hear? Takeo Spikes laughing his A-- off?
Please bench Willie Anderson for the KC game. This act of starting to extend his consecutive sequence is a disgrace. If he's not fit to go, stand him down and give Kooistra his chance.
I wonder will Marvin turn up to the 4pm meeting never mind the players!
The Bengals have 2 weeks to get some people healthy and in 4 games henry should be back, but marvin when are you going to clamp down on chad, he is a great player but also a real jerk, the rest of the team ,"maybe" are trying to win this game and chad is over talking and grinning with the pats head coach after a play, " maybe is it because he knew the game on national tv so the camera's would be on him, by joking during the game with the pats head coach how can he have his head in the game, Chad is a real "pain in the a--" anymore, trade him for a defensive pass rusher and run stopper, or just release him and tell him to go be on sat nite live we want players who arent selfish and need the camera on them all the time , this is a team game Chad not an "I" game and the "I" means Chad
Bengals' fans are truly pathetic (at least the ones that post on this blog). Fire Marvin Lewis! Are you insane!? Worse than Dick Lebeau?! Worse than Dave Shula?! Worse than Bruce Coslet?! Get a grip on reality here. Take a gander at some of the eggs those teams in the 90's laid. Christ, winning 6 games was considered a damn success. Lewis was and, is, the best thing to happen for the Bengals. Can you imagine if they hired Coughlin? The Bengals went from losing 8 games in a row year to year to actually realizing a winning streak. Stupid Bengals' fans. Get a modest taste of success one year and demand a Super Bowl the next.
"This offense is every bit as confused as the defense."
Amen to that comment. I'm sick and tired of these underachievers on offense. How'd we'd start the game ? Three 3-and-outs. That's unacceptable. Third down conversions were awful. We know the defense is pedestrain at best so it's essential that the ofeense sustain some drives.
GO BEARCATS
Hey ANON 9:51
When did a Bengals team in the "Mid 1980's go 2-14. Their worst record was in 1987 at 4-12 and the next year they went to the Super Bowl. The 1980's was the Bengals best decade as a franchise.
And why would Takeo Spikes of all people be "laughing his A-- off" Last I checked he is an Eagle and they are 1-3 like the Bengals. The record of Takeo's teams since he left Cincy is 28-40. The record of the Bengals is 36-32. What exactly is he laughing his A--about?
I have a few (dis)connected thoughts in response to some of the comments.
(a) Carson has indeed been less accurate this year. No doubt some of that is on him.
Some of that is also because of: (1) the O-Line troubles [when passes are high it is often because he is backpedalling from pressure] and (2) the need to build timing with a rotating (due to injury) cast of brand-new third receivers while C. Henry is out.
(b) Wow, the Bengals are paying the price now for Henry's immaturity and punk ways -- and their decision to draft him. If Henry comes back and shows he is not a flash-in-the-pan by producing at a high level for several years, then it will have been worth it. Now, we don't know.
(c) I like CJ a lot and have tremendous respect for his talent. His lack of maturity and occasional lack of focus (key drops) hurt the team last night and has in the past as well (e.g. locker-room meltdown at halftime in the playoff game). Chad still needs to grow up. He is too old for us to have to say that.
Can anyone ever remember seeing Marvin Harrison jawing at Manning over a disconnect?
(d) TJ Houshmanzadeh should be the least of anyone's concerns. He is a warrior. I guarantee you that both the coaches and the players would far rather have a teammate who jaws at the coaches from time to time than one who jaws at his quarterback or another teammate. An old Army tenet is that if you're going to gripe, gripe up the chain of command.
(e) The defense was ravaged with injuries, but played with heart. Couldn't expect better -- though it was a bitter pill to swallow. The performance of the offense concerns me more.
(f) Yes, Smith is not a "franchise" player, but he was the right player for us to franshise tag in the off-season. What better D-End were we going to get this past off-season if we let him go? None.
We got handled by a better, more talented team -- for the first time this year. We _should_ have won in Cleveland and Seattle -- bitter defeats. This time we just got pasted.
The Bengals are a mediocre team. At this point, while we should get much healthier starting after the bye week, it would be one hack of an accomplishment to make 9-7. I'm glad we've reached the poitn where mediocrity hurts.
Marvin has taken this team as far as he can. Time to find someone who will stand up to the players. His tirade last night should have been directly at Ocho, but he chose instead to blame the entire team. Pathetic. How could we go into the game with 4 linebackers, when we had a week to at least get some more bodies added to the roster.
"Hey Cincinnati -- Checking in from New England to see if how ridiculous the praise for the Pats was by the MNF guys, especially in the second half. I thought it was way overboard and I'm a Patriots fan."
I'm from NE too and I second that. Kornheiser must cease his mancrush on Brady and I'm getting sick of the saccharine praise heaped on this team and organization by national media. I could respect it more if it weren't so hollow and so cliched and so...over the top.
Jaworski in the second half: "The Patriots put such a focus on winning." No shit! I think EVERY franchise has an interest in winning! I very much doubt you have other team's GMs thinking: "Hmmmm...winning? That could improve our record if we focus on that..."
If I'm thinking this I can only imagine what a non-Pats fan is thinking. Without knowing it they're setting us up for a rather pronounced fall from grace [even with as good a football team as the Pats are- I don't think they go 16-0 and they will have some clunkers and strife just as every team does]. When these things do happen the media will turn on a dime to lay the blame on "Videogate."
Boy oh' Boy Mark, I owe you an apology. I was the one who said that you were being a pessimist and that the Bengals were going to come out fighting. This team is really bad. I used to think that Marvin was the greatest thing to happen to this team. He did bring us back to some respectability, I just don't know if he is the one to take to the next level. Did you hear where J. Smith was talking on the bench why our schemes never seem to work? I think that says it all right there.
Mark I know your a busy guy, but your blog is lacking. You post one thing every other day and on game day just give a couple updates of things we can get anywhere else. If your too busy to write on the blog, let dustin do it, at least he was making posts.
In the 90s, Boomer (his last season) took over a pathetic Bengal team and the second half of the season with his leadership made the Bengals an entirely different team that won. My suggestion is next time Palmer doesn't look forward to the challenge a team presents, bench him, because he's not the leader this team requires. You turn a team around by taking a leadership role and directing people toward an end. If you don't beat the Pats, at least you approach the game as if you can and do everything you can to accomplish that. Palmer didn't believe. Funny, I find it difficult to believe in him now -- where's the guy who wanted to be the best and meet every challenge?
Marvin Lewis is better than Dave Shula. Big whoop. Some Bengals fans expectations are so low that being better than rancid is what they look forward to.
THIS ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. Mike Brown puts a crappy product on the field, for DECADES, and we fans take it and ask for more? No thanks!!!!!!!!!!
Right now this team is rancid. Just like most of the 1990s. Worst on special teams, worst on defense, can't run the ball... it's THREE GUYS who are carrying this "team"... and they cannot beat whole teams by themselves.
It's too bad we can't fire the whole lot of them. Mike Brown should go first!!!!!!!!!!
I must admit that, I too, drank the kool-aid after the Bengals finally put together a winning season. Clearly, that was an anomaly. I posted early before the season that the loss of Brahm and Steinbach along with Willie and Levi being hurt would hurt the Bengals more than anyone has really let on. For awhile there, we had a very nice/cohesive O-line that gave Carson the protection he clearly needs and opened holes for Rudi. This years unit is a shadow of itself and continues to make mistakes (how many false starts last night?) on critical third down plays.
Our drafting has been atrocious combined with our lack of off-season free agent activity has set this organization back a good 3-5 years. Our defense continues to be our achilles heal with respect to stopping the run and putting pressure on the QB. How many years have we been lamenting about this?!?
I'm sure Marvin is a great guy, however, the rash of off-field arrests should have been a CLEAR indication as to the lack of control/respect he (and his staff) has amongst the players. It is clear that this is not a disciplined "team" rather a bunch of individuals who are talented but have not bought into Marvin's concept (whatever that is, since we wouldn't understand).
I praise the fans of Cincinnati for supporting this train wreck, but let's be realistic, this team is no where close to being play-off bound and I think .500 would be a stretch. To be a play-off caliber team, one not need to look any further than the team that kicked our butts in every facet of the game last night. They are well coached/disciplined and have been a model for success in these "modern" times.
The one constant in all of this is our very own Mike Brown. Until we make a wholesale change in how this organization is run, Vince Lombardi himself wouldn't be able to consistently win here. I think the fans deserve better (given the money they have so generously shelled out) and the media needs to be more critical of this team (can you imagine what/how this team would endure in NYC?).
I weep for the future . . .
the fix is simple, the remaining schedule is fairly good for the bengals, 1st fire Marvin , bring in Marty, what he will do is, hire a defensive head coach and special teams coach that will "TEACH" the players to stay in their lanes and areas and show them how to "TACKLE", then Marty will keep the players that are "TEAM PLAYERS" and get rid of the ones who are not team players, so this means "GOOD-BYE CHAD" you are not a "TEAM PLAYER" and even if they dont respond this year Marty will bring in some players that will help this team, Marty plays old school , he will teach our offensive line how to "RUN BLOCK AGAIN" which for some reason they have forgot and teach the defensive line how to stop the run and rush the passer, and I am tired of blaming excuses about injuries , hell many teams go through this and they find a way to win and they dont have a very good QB and recievers like we do, so Marvin has had enough time to build a defense, "I heard that he was a defensive genius" BULLCRAP!!!!!.But Mike will never make this change and I bet his dad is rolling over and over in his grave, so lets blame MIKE BROWN for not having the guts to do the right thing for our fans.
I just watched the video of Marvin's post game conference on the Bengals website.
Could the local press have, perhaps, done anything but pitch him up softballs? When does he get some serious scrutiny from the Press (who claim to represent the fans when that is convenient to them).
It sounded like everyone was afraid they would set him off or something.
What a bunch of pansies (and, no, I am not talking about the players).
Marvin Lewis makes more idle threats than anyone I know. Always talking about making changes and blah, blah, blah. He better do something to get some respect from these players and before Carson decides he wants to be traded to a real NFL team. And Chad Johnson, stop showing off and just do your job. It's an embarassment. I'm tired of hearing about Chad and his stupid celebrations!!!! Why don't we hear more about TJ. He produces week after week and he NEVER shows off. TJ lets his work do his talking.
BYE 42, Bengals 17
Hey Cinci,
I'm also from NE and a big Pats fan.
Although it was a great win for us last night I'm sorry to see how much you guys are beating yourselves up over this loss.
Even though we played well, it was obvious from my living room that the Bengals were hurting and missing some key players. I thought they still showed a lot of spunk and determination, at least on defense.
Your receivers and Carson are top rate, and always a threat to score quick. Agreed: The bickering should be kept off the field in the name of team unity.
Lastly, your fans are unbelievable. Like ours. The whole place looked LOUD ORANGE on my screen. Great football town, great support for their team.
I'm glad we beat you, but we still respect your football team, no matter what you think of it.
Marvin Lewis suffers from the same problem Dick LeBeau did. Excellent coordinators, but neither have what it takes to be a quality head coach in the NFL.
Hey Cincinnati - Coach Lewis can thank the GM who brought him all these "all mouth no skill" players
Can you picture anyone on the Patriots doing something retarded like Chad Johnson putting on that HOF Jacket during a game ?
Its stuff like that which makes me wonder what Lewis is doing-you dont allow a "clown" on the team, and Johnson is a clown.
He and the rest of that team need to keep their F'in mouths shut, and learn to play football.
Its really that simple.
The GM brings in clowns, and Marvin Lewis lets them act like clowns.
Getting rid of Marvin Lewis? You fans are feeble-minded or ban-wagoners from the '05 season. I really shouldn't have to remind you of where we stood in the division before Marvin arrived. And yes, to the simple folk, it certainly does look like we have no offense and our defense is garbage.... just like any other team would look with 2 active linebackers and a tattered O-line! Believe it or not, football is more than a quarterback and 2 famous wide-receivers. You have to look at the season as a marathon, not a sprint. We're beat up and we've got a week to recover and get our stuff straighten out. Aside from divisional games, we play KC, Jets, Buffalo, Zona, StLouis, San Fran and Miami!!! If you can't have faith in those games, don't bother pretending to be a fan, because some of us remember what 2-14 seasons smelled like and I know for a fact that today, we are nowhere near as bad as those days.
So go ahead and call for a new coach and you might as well call yourself cheap and near-sighted. Me, I'll be rooting for Marvin every week cuz I know where we've come from and when we turn it on in the second half of the season with momentum into the playoffs, I'll be ashamed to acknowledge you doubters as fans. Check Your Ego Bengals Fans.

You are exactly right.
well marvin wanted chris perry drafted along with odell and every other guy that has gotten into trouble has been marvin's choice. Marvin needs to go if the bengals dont go 8-8. I say hire marty schottinhiemer. Atleast he will discpline players. He might not win playoff games, but marvin has only taken us to one playoff game and they got destoyed because of marvin.
HEY ANON 3:28
the Bengals don't have a GM. Marvin picks his own players. Do us all a favor and research your topic a little before you infect everyone with your useless, inaccurate points about a topic you know nothing about.
ESPN does not respect us at all. Even when we came out swinging against the Ravens, Emmitt and Steve Young found a way to criticize and downplay our win.
As far as the team goes, I don't know how much of this is really Marvin's fault. Before the arrests and injuries, weren't we one of the better defenses in the league? Weren't we near the top in takeways and interceptions? Odell Thurman and David Pollack were going to be the foundation for a solid defense. We've had to rewrite the script in the middle of the season for the past 2 years. How many of the guys on the D now even played together in training camp? Where is the chemistry? It's not there - the guys just met each other! As the coach, Marvin will probably take the fall, but I'm not sure that is fair. Who else would any of you bring here who could do a better job with who we've got? How soon we forget the coaching shuffles of the 90's. That didn't get us too far, did it?
MB, you're hallucinating. This team is ranked no better than fifth WORST in every defensive and special teams category. That smells a LOT like the Dave Shula years!!!
I've been a fan since the early days with Paul Brown. And I can tell you this team stinks.
Don't blame injuries, I think the patriots were the most injured team (or one of the top injured teams) in 2004..and still won the super bowl. you can't be one deep at 90% of the positions. WHo ever heard of a team being out of linebackers?????
