Lewis on Chad rumor

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis this afternoon was asked if there were any truth to a rumor reported by ESPN that the Bengals are thinking of trading wide receiver Chad Johnson in the offseason. The network cited unnamed sources inside the organization.

"I don't think there's any sources inside this organization," was the extent of Lewis' answer.

Lewis also praised his star wide receiver.

"He has been a team player," Lewis said of Johnson. "He set out this year to be a better blocker. We've been happy with that. The biggest thing we impress upon our guys (here Lewis referenced the team's skilled offensive players, such as Chad and Rudi Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Carson Palmer) there are more opportunities when we convert our third downs. Yesterday (7 of 10 on third down against the Jets) was the first step in that direction."

Johnson, walking to his car in the players parking lot, said there is truth in everything that is said.

"There is always truth in something," he said.

You heard the trade rumor. Does that bother you?

"There’s always truth to something," he said.

How much truth?

"That’s the key."

Johnson also said he would not be surprised if he were traded because "this is a dirty business."

Earlier, Lewis held his news conference:

Asked if tailback Chris Perry would come off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list this week, practice and possibly play against the Steelers, Lewis said, "There's a chance."

Asked if there's a chance suspended Chris Henry, like Tank Johnson in Dallas, would be allowed to practice before his suspension were over, Lewis said, "There's a chance." Henry has two games remaining on his NFL suspension for violating its personal conduct policy. He was in the locker room Monday. He has to apply for reinstatement.

In terms of injuries, Lewis said that tailback Rudi Johnson (hamstring), linebacker Caleb Miller (back), wide receiver Antonio Chatman (hamstring) and linebacker Corey Mays (hamstring) might be ready to play against the Steelers.

However, linebacker Ahmad Brooks (groin), "might be the furthest away," Lewis said.

Safety Dexter Jackson (hip) and offensive tackle Willie Anderson (knee) were "banged up" during the Jets game and, though Lewis was not specific, appear that they will be ready to play.

I really hope that the Bengals DON'T trade Chad. If we were winning, Cincinnati fans would not being saying anything AND the organization wouldn't be pondering this. Too many people around here are so quick to pass judgement on situations around here. The same people who wondered if Chad's worth it before the game are now praising him after the game. He's one of the best and still is one of the best players in the NFL and especially the Bengals. Knock it off with the rumors and quick judgement.

Sorry chad but you're no Grasshopper.

Name the last trade Mike Brown pulled off that helped the team. Hell, name any trade he's ever made. Cryptic quotes from Johnson only serve to fuel the sense that's he begun to distance himself from the losing. I say good riddance if he goes. He's AllPRO on the field, and ALL Bling NO RING in his head. It's boring, distracting, self serving, and old. Give me two T.J.s anyday.

Marvin Lewis' press conferences are useless. He gives no information, and he thinks the media and fans don't know anything about football. It's funny...he'll answer any question when the team is doing well but when something controversial is asked he has no tact or charisma to answer it. Maybe CJ is just a glorified Corey Dillon who can't grasp the concept of a team and won't give up personal goals for team goals. What this team needs is a hard-nosed leader and they don't have it.

I am a firm believer in that you are a product of your environment. To the last poster, you can't say Corey Dillion was like that because once he got to New England, he was a different player. His behavior was a mix of his personality and the environment. Same thing can be said for Marvin who has been very successful other places and here he becomes a product of the Mike Brown environment. The corners, were good in college and they misteriously good to pot once they are here. A product of the Kevin Coyle and Deltha Oneil environment. Deltha O'Neil is the exception, or maybe one of the creators of the environment. I believe him to be a worse cancer than Chad has been. Chad is an excellent player who maybe at times gets a tad bit misguided by all the success in his life. He could be TO, but he hasn't taken it that far. I would hate to see him go, but if we can make the team better by getting rid of a good player, then so be it. Just don't give him away, make sure it gives your team the tools to be successful. I would say the only people who should be untouchable are Carson Palmer and maybe some of the younger players on defense. (Brooks, Hall, Joseph) if you believe they truely have the skill sets to be good NFL defenders.

Chad may have been a good trade last year, but now his value is as low as its ever been. We'll get nothing for him, and someone else (please not the Patriots) will get a 1,000-yard 10 touchdown bargain.

Chad's a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them. Expect him to be a model team player for the rest of the season.

I left a similar post on PD's blog about trading Chad. I like Chad Johnson. However if you read PD's article. It seems there is discontent in locker room. It's about winning. Glenn Holt played well Sunday. If he develops + you get Chris Henry (Hopefully has his sh_t together) and TJ. That is a good WR corp. You subtract from a strength to shore up weaknesses. Obviously has be a good trade. How bout Chad to Atlanta for Deangelo Hall and a 3rd RD pick? There are teams desperate for an All Pro WR.

I hate Cincinnati sports fans who would replace hall of famers with guys who barely make it. With the Reds the call is to replace Dunn & Griffey with Hopper & Freel. Now you want to replace CJ with Glenn Holt, a guy many of you were wanting to cut after the Seattle game when he fumbled the kick off. Chad won't be traded and I'm surpised its not profootballtalk.com that started this round of non-stories.

Trade Chad Johnson and the Brown family can watch their team wallow in the sewer for another decade! Chad puts up Jerry Rice like numbers and will continue to do so for years. Even if he loses a step, no one, and I repeat NO ONE, makes the acrobatic catches that he is able to make. His body control and hands are UNMATCHED! And tell ESPN that I heard Tom Brady's going to be traded to Miami by the end of the year. You heard it here first at Curnutte!

"Every player on every team in the NFL would love to have 85". Yikes.
And everyone in America would love to have me as President.

There are players on the Bengals that would love to see him gone.

He's living in an alternate universe.

Well if it isn't the ugly head of you-know-what rearing itself to find a scapegoat for another year of professional football mediocrity in the Nati. "Biased" media and no-nothing yahoo fans are once again teaming up to chase yet another great athlete out of our city. Cincy natives have never warmed up to Johnson's flashy ways; not quite the "company man" that Marvin Lewis is. Funny, nobody cares that Palmer shows his receivers up by yelling at them on the field, but when Chad defends himself to Palmer on the sidelines, HE'S the cancer. I guess DeCourcy didn't see Palmer repeatedly slapping his thigh like a spoiled brat during the exchange. When we were winning Chad was fine; now he's the problem. What a joke. Does Chad play defense? Maybe he should. Former crack-addict Josh Hamilton is embraced as a hero in this town, while the GREATEST BENGAL WR EVER is being run out. I thought at some point in my Cincinnati life, the beer-swilling, cornhole-playing hillbillies would go away, leaving Cincinnati a slim chance for rising from the dead. Hmm, not so much.

Deangelo Hall???How bout Chad to Atlanta for Deangelo Hall and a 3rd RD pick?.Wouldn't be a smart trade seeing he has a worst attitude problem than Chad. Chad's not the problem. The defense is the problem. Chad doesn't carry enough weight to revamp our whole defense . As far as you lamers taking jabs at Corey Dillion. I remember him being the only productive member of our team. If you carried a whole team by yourself maybe you too would become selfish. You guys are a prime example of " No matter what you do, people will hate you." You can't please everybody.

If you don't want Chad because of how he acts, then I don't know why you would want Deangelo Hall.

There are some things that I, as a Bengals fan, cannot deny.

#1: Chad produces. Has lead the AFC in receiving yards for four straight years.

#2: Chad does a lot of things that make him seem like a bad teammate.

Monday night vs. the Patriots - He really disappointed me. The offense is driving down the field, Chad makes a great catch before the two minute warning. During the two minute warning Chad is on the Patriot sideline chatting up Bill Belichick and the Patriot defense instead of huddling with his teammates discussing how they were going to get some points on the board. How could anyone, even the most naive of homers, not see this as a completely selfish act?

That very same game he runs the wrong route - which results in an interception - and proceeds to yell and throw a tantrum on national television.

In the K.C. Game he gave up on that route because he knew he was going to get hit. We've got great guys like Willy Anderson risking their careers by playing injured and this guy gives up on a route because he's afraid of getting hit. Yes, that play also resulted in an interception and a K.C. offensive touchdown. Later in that same game..more sideline douchebaggery..slapping Marvin Lewis' hand off of his shoulder.

Now he's referring to himself in the third person?

I'm not saying "Trade Chad", because I have no idea what goes on in the locker room or in the board room, but Bengals fans do have cause for concern.

Chad (along with Carson & T.J.)is one of the best things to happen to the Bengals in a very long time. A little non-negative attention from the press and the announcers enhances the focus on a team with tremendous potential. I think any serious intention of trading him is a mistake. Chances are he's going to start looking toward a bigger market soon enough...why rush him?
