Morning after musings

A little more than 12 hours after the Bengals snapped their four-game losing streak with a 38-31 victory over a bad Jets team, here are some observations:

-- When all else fails, blame the media. Now we're the bad guys, the haters. Marvin Lewis says the media is making up stories. We told him to run the ball, and he agreed. OK. It's the Bengals against the world, is how Chad Johnson described Lewis' message to his team. Thing is, outside of the fan base, football fans in general, and those with a financial interest in the organization, the world doesn't really care whether the Bengals win or lose. They're very entertaining. (Now I'm talking to myself, so no one can say I'm insulting them: It's entertainment, stupid.)

-- I just thought back to a sports literature class I had at Miami University with former English Department chair Bob Johnson. We discussed the evolution of activity -- play, game and sport. Play is for the simple enjoyment of participation. Game is organized. Sport is business.

-- It's Steelers Week. Lewis is always the most uptight the week before playing Pittsburgh. Should be even more anti-media talk this week. The Bengals are in their trench.

-- Good things happen to good people department: Kenny Watson.

-- The Jets really aren't that good. They're bad. Eric Mangini, now 1-6, a year after making the playoffs as a rookie coach with a 10-6 record, is under fire. He could lose his job. Lewis, in his fifth year, 2-4, two seasons removed from a playoff berth, is safe. Mike Brown will not fire him. Brown believes he has the coach and quarterback in Carson Palmer, the two most important positions in the program, to be competitive for a long time. He's right.

-- ESPN is reporting that the Bengals are looking to trade Chad Johnson because his alleged selfishness and me-first attitude is hurting the team. I haven't heard anything like that. The Bengals got Johnson to sign an under-market contract extension a couple of years ago. I would doubt he's going anywhere. I will see what I can find out.

-- When it comes to Chad Johnson, whom has always been polite and cooperative with me, I'm just not sure what's real and what's part of the act. You almost need a full-time reporter to cover Johnson alone, which I guess is what his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, wants.

-- I am reminded, in closing, of something my former Enquirer colleague Tim Sullivan said often and wrote: You can't feel sorry for people making as much money as those people involved in professional sports these days. It's referred to around the beat as the "Sully Rule." You wish some of these guys well because you appreciate what they offer as people. Others are over-sized children, pampered since they first showed the ability to run faster or hit or throw a ball with great skill.

Marvin had a 4 year honeymoon in Cincinnati and it looks like he can't take any reporting that reflects the truth. The Bengals have been to the playoffs 8 times in 40 years, or a 20% clip. After this season is over Marvin's Bungles will have one playoff appearance in 5 years, right at that 20% number. Considering the talent he inherited, and twice being 8-5 only to lose 3 in a row to finish 8-8, it really isn't fair to be teased in this manner.
I would just prefer 4-12 campaign, last place in the division, and not to be teased. Nonetheless we are on the verge of full blown Bungleitis. Bill Cowher might like that 2.5 million dollar Indian Hill spread that Marvin calls home.
At least Cowher has earned it.

I Think that if the Cincinnati Bengals trade Chad, they are the dumbest organization in the National football leauge. Chad is what allows all of our other wide recievers and tight ends to get open. It is just numbers unless they are only rushing four when you double cover a reciever somebody is bound to be open. If they trade him i will never watch again!

Trading Chad for a good defender or a very high draft pick makes sense since the Bengals are DEEPEST at the WR position and to improve your team you sometimes have to trade great players to get better depth and quality at weaker spots on the roster--so you would rather watch Chad play 16 games than the Bengals go to the playoffs without Chad?

TJ and Chris Henry et al. might miss Chad's attracting double coverage and prime cover BUT if you want the Bengals to return to the playoffs, the defense simply has to be vastly improved. So does the offensive line.

The Jets basically gave the Bengals a total gift in the second half yesterday, and the Steelers, fresh off a loss to Denver and pissed to the hilt, ought to absolutely steamroll the Bungles this week.

Nothing has changed here except for Watson's trade value. Rudi or Watson could be traded for defenders too after the Bengals drop to 2-5 next weekend.

Is Chris Perry going to be put back on the roster this week. Mark please beat this out of Marvin, Thanks,

Everyone should wise up. There isn't anyone going to get traded from the Bengals, especially right now. The trade deadline has passed so we have what we have. From an organizational stand point, this team will never change it's stripes until it seriously re-invests into it scouting program. We will continue to make questionable draft selections at the 3rd-7th rounds, which are the most critical. It is laughable to think in todays evolution of football that a coach can coach his area (Linebackers, line, etc.) and still have enough time to scout potential college players. Mike Brown believes in a system that helped his Dad become one of the best coaches and owners in the history of football, however that hasn't worked since the 1980's and we have almost 20 years of piss poor football to prove it. The definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior and expecting a different response.

The problem with this team is not players, coaching or schemes, it starts at the top. After that you can start holding them accountable.

Whatever we do, let's just make sure we don't hire Anonymous 10:46 as GM. Trade Chad for a defender or a very high draft pick? Are you serious? What do you expect to get for Chad? We'd be lucky to get a 2nd round pick. And then, of course, you are assuming this defense is just one player away. Which player would that be, eh? DT? DE? LB? SS? Chad is so expendable because of Chris Henry, right? Last I checked, the guy was suspended - or did you miss that part? We're deepest at WR, right? Have you been paying attention? We've gone the entire year without being able to find a THIRD WR on this team, so let's trade our #1, is that it? Please... And then you're gonna trade Rudi or Watson for more defenders, right? Rudi would get you a 5th rounder at BEST, considering his mileage. Watson has played admirably of late, but he is a career backup. You'd be lucky to get a 6th rounder for him. You, my friend, are not playing with a full deck.

Cincy has an oddly good record at Pittsburgh. Stealers will be mad as hell, but also nervous about losing a third straight at home to the Bengals.

It should be an error strewn & ill tempered game, which shortens the odds on a Cincy win and makes it worth looking forward to!

What a clown. Yeah, let's trade all of the skill position players for defensive players. Got any names? This is not fantasy football guys, it's the NFL. Significant trades are extremely rare in these days of free agency and the salary cap.
The problem with this team is not the head coach or a sometimes irritating wr, it's the way the front office is run. Last time I checked, I don't believe Chad Johnson has been arrested, beaten up any women, owed thousands to anyone for child support, killed dogs, spit on opposing players, been involved in drug dealing, had a DUI, arranged contract murders, been brought up on gun charges, missed tackles and blown assignments on defense and special teams, misdiagnosed injuries, made poor draft picks, etc...
While I agree he can be a pain in the ass and a distraction, it is a disservice to focus on him as the problem.

The bengals are deepest at the WR position? You have to be kidding. My guess is you are either blind or really stupid.

Trade Chad and then rely on Chris Henry... Whose Chris Henry? Oh wait, I remember, he's the guy who was suspended for 8 games this season because he couldn't stay out of trouble. Like I'd really want to rely on him!!! For that matter, he may not even be reinstated (see Odel Thurman). The Bengals do not have a quality 3rd wide receiver (although Glenn Holt did have a decent game yesterday) let alone any real depth at the position and people want to trade Chad? Chad is NOT the problem. Yes he sometimes can be a little over the top but a defense that is ranked 30th in the league is the problem. The best way to address that is to use at least the first 3 draft picks next year on defense. Marvin doesn't need to be drafting any more Kenny Irons or Chris Perry's. They need to concentrate on LB's and DE/DT's. Bill Parcells made the comment on ESPN a week or so ago that if you look at the Bengals draft the last 3 years, see how many defensive players they picked in the first two rounds'. Then again, maybe Marvin isn't the defensive genius people thought he was when he coached with Baltimore.

Chad is gonna be 30. Most WR's decline fast fast fast at 30.

The old saying that, "words have the power of life and death" is so true. Especially in the always negative comments from the idiots who post on these message boards, and the media. The Bengals "die" every year, because of the negative comments made constantly by all of the racist "Marvin-Haters" and such.

To all of you, if you have nothing positive and encouraging to say, the best thing for you to do would be to remain silent! Or move and take your negativity with you!

It's sad that in a city where the media is so horrible at doing their jobs, that the media is now going to get all defensive when Marvin calls them on the carpet for it.

Mark, why is Mortensen scooping you on a story when you're JOB is to cover the team?

What's more sad is the mass fandom who doesn't know any better than to believe the garbage that the local media feeds them. How sad is it when the best beat writer for the Bengals works for the Columbus Dispatch?

All you have to do is read some of the comments on this blogpage and other like 1530 homer to realize just how dumb some fans and most media members are when it comes to the game of football. Canutte comes across like a grade A jerk like many in the talk radio world. hey mark, you are either going to be a "responsible columnist or a hack radio bum like to geeks on 1530 homer. get your head out of the butt of lance Mccalister and start reporting om the game of football. no one cares about you getting mad at Marvin or chad becuase they dont kiss the media's butt the same way Coslet and lebeau did. If fans had to make the choice between you, the bigoted media or marvin lewis and chad johnson. marvin and Chad would win in a Landslide. Chad and marvin 4ever....the hack, jealous, envious media geeks NEVER!!!!!!! keep it "REAL" Marvin, real Cincinnatians have your back....dont believe the media, they dont know JACK.....there just jealous hacks.......

Want to know what's really wrong with the Bengals, from an unbiased source, look at a recent article on MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21346809/

It points out the logical reasons why the Bengals have faltered this season. Number one being injuries, defense number two.

I think all the Marvin bashing has come from his unwillingness to full interact with the local media.

Interesting comments regarding "sport" or "entertainment". Watched the Bengals play 24 hrs after watching the World Cup Rugby Final in Paris. No comparison in skill, courage, endurance, but perhaps American Football wins in the "entertainment" section (cheerleaders, hot dogs, etc).Generally though, overpaid, under-performing athletes, standing around for 2 1/2 hours of a 3 hour game.

Hey Anon 1:18
Who is "Canutte"
Before you call people dumb at anything you might want to check the spelling on the subject you are talking about.

You signed yourself Hater Free, ironically just after calling the media Bigoted. Kinda nasty for a blog. Must be nice to be so clearly superior to others.

I have yet to see any of the writers in Cincinnati be racists. You, on the other hand, come across as a very predjudiced person, and are trying to play the race card in a way that most minorities would probably cringe at. And with an extremely negative twist, judging by your personal comments toward Mark C. and others.

Lewis deserves the criticism he's getting for his arrogant behavior. I strongly believe Mike Brown is enabling him here, since ol Mike rarely deals upfront with accountability. In his 17 years running this team, he has consistently run things very, very poorly. I don't think anybody in their right mind can disagree. In short, he has proven himself to be a loser as a GM. PERIOD. And he won't fire himself. I believe the term is blind arrogance.

Marvin is probably getting his "circle the wagons" attitude from Mike. Coslet got really testy as he started to lose regularly. Is this eerily similar?
