Bengals waive Nicholson

The Bengals this afternoon announced that they have waived linebacker A.J. Nicholson.

The statement from the club's PR department reads:

The Bengals today waived LB A.J. Nicholson. Nicholson is a second-year NFL player in 2007. As a rookie last season, he played in two games (no statistics) and was inactive for 14 games.

Maybe tomorrow Nicholson will come out with a press release saying he "accidently waived himself"

Good move by the Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals should officially changed their team name to "Mean Machine."

If AJ Nicholson could play as well as, let's say, Chris Henry, would the Bengals have waived him ?

Of course not.

Henry has received a half dozen chances because of his on-field talent. Don't let the Bengals organization fool you into thinking character matters if the person can play.

In light of this.."Under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association, teams can only release players for lack of talent." probably not.

Can't really hold the Bengals responsible for this brilliant piece of legalese.

I love it when to take a press release and make it come alive with your unique perspectives.

Don't forget, though, that acc. to the CBA, you can only cut players for performance, not character. Nicholson had no stats, thus he could be cut without the penalty the Players Assoc. would hit them with. The same cannot be said of Chris Henry.

Now that the accuser has admitted to lying, why isn't A.J. again allowed to lose his roster spot in training camp--the proper way of firing somebody for "lack of talent"?

This is NFL that Goodell has wrought. Accusation is guilt. There's no way the Bengals cut this guy at this time for football reasons.
