Bengals continue to entertain prospects

Item 1: Harvard running back Clifton Dawson is visiting the Bengals today as one of the team's 30 pre-draft prospect visits.

Item 2: Carson Palmer said late this morning that he is confident that Doug Johnson would be a solid No. 2 quarterback now that Anthony Wright has signed with the Giants.

Item 3: A reader asked earlier if I thought Odell Thurman would be back with the Bengals this season. Thurman's representatives have been very quiet lately, and Thurman is not around the team for its offseason program. He is believed to be in alcohol rehab in Georgia.

Do I think he will play for the Bengals this season? One day I think he might, the next I think it's not possible. Nobody is really talking, but Marvin Lewis has been more pointed in his public criticism of Thurman than any other player he has coached in Cincinnati in four years.

I know how you feel regarding Odell. I feel the same way. But I keep telling myself that no coach is going to waste so much breath berating a player for his behavior if he figures that player is out of the picture, so I keep thinking this means he plans on Odell being back, albeit on a very short leash. Then, the other side of the argument crops up, where I figure Lewis already has Odell written off, and wants to make an example out of him in hopes of warding off future problems for another one of his players. Guess we'll all find out together, won't we?

I don't see how he has wasted any breath on Odell. Marvin has repeatedly gone out of his way to avoid talking about the guy. I think if it wasn't for the NFL players union, Thurman would have been gone last year. I think Thurman's problem with alcohol is worse than fans could imagine. In a perfect world, Ed Hartwell comes in this year and helps out Brooks in the middle, then Thurman returns the following year to play the other middle backer when the Bengals convert over to the 3-4, or Brooks slides over to the Will spot.

I think he is back THIS year. Marvin sure did know that July date of reinstatement off the top of his head didn't he? Odell's talented player, 2nd round pick, they gave him $1.4 mill in a bonus and he is on his rookie contract which was a 5 year deal. You see what free agents cost? You think they are just going to cut him? If he screws up again the league will banish him anyway. If that happens it won't be our problem to do. Unless he is that much of a cancer in the locker or something else that I am unaware of (physically from the addiction?) he will be back. We are all disapponted with his problems but he isn't pac-man jones either. Lets not send him to Siberia for a DUI and failing a drug test. The policy is for 1 year suspension and reinstatement not 1 yr suspension and Siberia... I think Marvin has been harder on him because he cares. Lets not make Odell worse out to be worse than he is.

The one thing about O'Dell is that Marvin has not and apparently will not say he is done as a Bengal. Only time will tell but my gut feeling is if O'Dell was truly done as a Bengal Marvin would say so as opposed to his typical lameass answers on the subject.
ie; "I don't talk about players not on current roster".
Typical BS he gave Mark and the other beat writers during most press conferences last season.
Smirk and go to next question he likes.

I'm torn. On one hand I feel like the Bengals should be done with Thurman, on the other hand the team has absolutely hemmoraged defensive talent during the free agency and the first thing they need to do is stop the bleeding. I don't really want him here, but if he's able to play well the Bengals really need him here.
