NFL not clear on Henry

The question of whether Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry will serve a suspension for his off-field transgressions is in the hands of the NFL office.

This afternoon, responding to the question from the Enquirer, AFC Information Manager Steve Alic had a prepared statement: "We are reviewing this and will take appropriate disciplinary action in due course," Alic said.

The question, following Henry's guilty plea this morning in Kenton District Court that he provided alcohol to under-aged females, is whether the crime falls under the NFL substance abuse policy. The crime involved alcohol, but Henry did not consume it.

The sense is that Henry will be suspended for four games at the start of the 2007 season. He tied with a team-high nine touchdown receptions in just 36 total catches and had a team best 16.8-yard per catch average.

Henry already has one strike against him under the policy, a guilty plea to marijuana possession, that required counseling/treatment.

The second violation brings a four-game NFL suspension, the one that linebacker Odell Thurman served at the start of the 2006 season. Thurman was suspended for one year (the third strike) after a DUI arrest Sept. 25.

If memory serves Henry had a 2 game from the league and one game from Marvin.

What was the two gamer for?

the two gamer was for the Thurman dui bust, he was in the car and had "alcohol on his breath"

So is Henry so talented that the Bengals can't survive without him? Looks like they didn't so so well with him, so cut him - now. Maybe a change of venue will do him good and get him out of our hair.

Ever since all of the trouble from henry started, the media have told us that, due to the collective bargaiing agreement, the Bengals could not cut a player with unresolved leagal issues unless it was for poor on-field performance.

Well, guess what? Henry's legal issues are all resolved now. You'd better hurry up and cut him before he does something else stupid and ties your hands again.

After reading your Mike Brown article -- and then Bronson's -- the impression I get is that he's not really serious. Actions speak louder than words. And, while he and Marvin have been saying (vaguely) the right things, their actions -- signing even more ex-cons and future ex-cons -- don't match their rhetoric. They even signed an ex-con on the day Marvin announced his latest "get tough" policy.

Maybe union rules do make it tough to cut a player. But, "conduct detrimental to the team" gives owndership latitude.

What I thought I heard Carson saying was "We can win without these clowns. Their talents are so unique that they can't be replaced." So, it's a shock to the system to see Mike Brown -- PAUL BROWN's son! -- suffer (and pursue) so many fools.

The "this time we are serious anout cracking down!" stuff rings very hollow after hearing it month after month -- and actions don't match words. Ultimately, the resposnibility is ownership, not the coach. In the past, it seems as though Katie has talked sense into Mike Brown at strategic moments. This might be another good moment.

To the person that said "the Bengals didn't do well with Henry, so cut him", that line of thinking is silly.

I'm not saying that one might want to cut him for his antics. But to say that well, the team finished 8-8 with him so cutting him won't really affect the team makes no logical sense. For that matter, the team went 8-8 with Carson Palmer. Do you want to cut him also?

The Bengals went 8-8 primarily because their defense stinks. Henry is, talent wise, one of the 20 best WRs in the NFL. And he's the third WR! He makes a huge difference when he's out there. The offense will suffer significantly if he isn't on the team. Whether the team as a whole will be better off without him is an unanswerable question. But I tire of the comments of "well, we didn't win with him...".
One person doesn't win games.

Chris Henry should have taken the full sentence. If anyone thinks he can fulfill the terms of his release... I want some of what they're on.
He should check himself into jail ASAP because he cannot meet the following: 1) no drinking 2) stay out of bars.
Finally, who wants him to speak to the youth of this area. Will he be trolling for cell phone numbers while at HOLMES HIGH??????

But Carson wasn't off breaking the law other places. The boy is not serious about his craft. What good is his "talent" if he continues to bring the team down. Cut him. Cut him now. Do it quick and move on.
