Bengals' last pick is LSU WR Brazell

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals grabbed former U.S. Olympian Bennie Brazell, an LSU wide receiver, with their last pick and the 231st of the draft late this afternoon.

He finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdle at Athens, Greece, in 2004.

Brazell had 13 catches for 292 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers in 2005. He is 6 feet 1, 176 pounds.

He was the former No. 1 prep hurdler in the nation.

"He can run like the wind," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said of Brazell. He was the 110th-rated wide receiver in the draft.

well i'm glad we got what we needed the most another receiver who didn't even play football last year. What happened to the TE?

Truly another genius draft by Marvin. Speed, speed and special team help with line starters in two-years. What's the concern about TE's? The Bengals will continue to use the TE's for blocking. Great job Marvin?

I agree. Would like to have seen Mercedes taken in the first round, but other than that, great job. Marvin is in an enviable position to draft potential for year after next. Good draft!

Dee Web was still on the board. An early entry junior who start for 2 years for FSU would have been a better choice to add some more competition at DB.

A lot of turds in this draft... hope they can stay out of trouble.

Tyler did you get your mothers permission to use the family computer. The bengals drafted a WR in the 6th and 7th round last year. So we wasted the last 3 picks of the draft. All 3 are projects at best and may see a little bit of time on special teams. Please know what you are talking about before you even considering writing anything ever again.

Ya, WR Brazell is the 110th wide receiver in the draft. Nice pick, HUH!! Dee Webb would have been a nice pick.

There is no write up on espn.com on Brazell. Not a good sign.

Dee Webb is from Florida. The write up on epsn.com.
Overall: Webb played in 11 games on special teams and six on defense as a true freshman in 2003 after missing the first two games of the season with an ankle injury. He started all 12 games at cornerback as a sophomore in 2004, when he saw the most plays (defense and special teams) of any player on the team that season and finished with 61 tackles, three interceptions and 10 broken up passes. Webb started all 13 games as a junior in 2005 and finished with 46 tackles, one interception and 13 PBU. Webb is an early entry prospect who played just three seasons at Florida. He has shown flashes of the potential to develop into a fulltime starting cover corner in the NFL and he also finished his career on a high note with two of his best performances coming in his final two outings versus Florida State

McNeal is a "Slash" they have said, in other words a WR who can be an emergency QB in special situations. OK fine, but then they follow that with not one but TWO more WRs.

There is no way none zip zilch nada that all three of those guys make the team. Not gonna happen. It's simple mathmatics. Therefore they have just wasted at least one draft pick. Flushed it right down the toity.

Are they that satisfied with themselves, that they can afford to be so wasteful with draft picks?

I would have thought, if you're taking a flyer on a guy or two, do it in an area of need like defensive back, not the richest position group on the team (WR). Kelley Washington would be a No. 2 WR on many NFL teams. Ditto Chris Henry. And they have done nothing but sing the praises of Tab Perry. Are they going to cut him now? Cut all of them and rebuild with unknown quantities like Bennie "The Gazelle" Brazell?

For goodness sakes, WHY? If I had to pick one position group least in need of overhauling on this team, it would be WR. They've got guys there who don't even make the two-deep who'd be starting elsewhere!

exactly, if I would grade their draft I would give the Bengals a C- at best.

Personally I would give them a B- but there is talent there (1-7) that may upgrade that if you look back in a few years. I would have liked to see us grab Pope or even Massaquoi in the 7th.
That said....this is one Bengal fan who believes "In Marvin we trust".

In the late rounds, you aren't looking to fill positions. You are looking to take risks on guys that have enough talent and may be able to steal a roster spot.

So what if the Bengals have to cut a seventh round draft pick. It happens all the time and is not the end of the world.

Marvin is drafting athletes, guys with the physical tools to succeed at this level. Would you rather that, or another draft pick wasted on a TE with "Sean Brewer" talent.

TE is the most overrated position in the NFL. Teams that rely on their TEs usually do so because their WRs are horrible. See Kansas City, San Diego, the Giants, etc... The fact is, who would you rather have the ball in the open field, CJ or Leonard Pope, Reggie McNeil or Anthony Fasano. I'll take a receiver with 4.3 speed over a tight end anytime. Besides, Brat likes going to the 3-4 WR sets anyway.

People have to realize that we made the playoffs this year. Drafting near the end each round, you aren't going to get the same quality of players you get drafting near the top. It's the way the NFL is set up, to keep teams competitive.

My take, I think Joseph and Whitworth were excellent picks, where they were taken. I think Frostee was a reach. I think Nicholson and McNeil were great values.

But, Marvin does this for a living, has a great track record, and sure knows a heck of a lot more than I do. As such, I am not qualified to grade this draft.

The wonders never cease, do they??? I have never witnessed such a collection of self-important losers in all of my life.

If you are drafting 6th and 7th rounders expecting them to come in right away and compete for playing time, that means your team is a disaster.

Look. Marvin drafted a 6'2 200lb McNeil, with 4.35 speed, who was athletic enough to play QB at a high level in DI. Give him a year or two to develop, and you will have an absolute stud as the 3rd reciever.

The kid from Penn State will come in, and take Walter's spot on Special Teams. He could well develop into a Pro-Bowl caliber special teams player. Again, in the 6th round, I'd much rather pick a kid like that, athleticism to make it in the NFL that is in need of refinement over a period of a season or two, versus a mid-level DI starter who has already mexed out to their ability level.

Brazell is a practice squad guy who has a chance to develop into a servicable NFL reciever/returner.

With the signing of Hamby today, as well as other FA's out there, the tight end position will be addressed. I am happy that the Bengals took athletes with their later picks instead of reaching for a Sean Brewer type disaster.
