Bengals take USC DE Rucker in third round

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

With some quality tight ends still remaining on the draft board, the Bengals took defensive end Frostee Rucker with their third-round pick tonight.

Rucker had 6.5 sacks in 2005 for the Trojans and appears to be somewhat of a reach, based on pre-draft projections by various publications that saw him as a sixth- or seventh-round pick.

Rucker, reached at his mother's home in Irvine, Calif., said late tonight that he expected to go anywhere from the third to the fifth round.

"What I did at USC, you're a pass rusher first, but you also have to stop the run," Rucker said. "I'm a forceful player, a team player, very aggressive, a defensive-minded guy."

Bengals defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan said Rucker projects to an end in the 4-3 defense. The Bengals already have Justin Smith and Robert Geathers as starters. The only other true end on the roster is second-year player Jonathan Fanene.

"He's fundamentally sound and tecnnically-minded," Bresnahan said. "He can come in here and build on what we already have. He is a good solid player and can bring that to the NFL."

Frostee is his given name. He said his father gave him the name because he wanted his son to have a unique name.

He is 6-3, 267 pounds and ran a 4.91 40-yard dash. He also is a former outside linebacker who originally signed to play at Colorado State.

Rucker started all 13 games for USC in 2005 and had 54 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Boy...Does Marvin think he is just going to draft projects this whole draft, because he feels we are just a few steps away or what? I don't get it. Last year, I felt great on the draft, but today, I feel like I am questioning all of it.

I was confused with the 2nd round pick, but seeing Byrd fall to us in the 3rd round, I was impressed.... then we didn't pick him.

Is there any chance that we plan to convert Kelly Washington to a tight end, or would he perhaps be trade bait for a team like St. Louis that just drafted 2 of the top tight ends out of 3 rounds?

How's Frostee against the run?

Not sure why we didn't grab a TE.

Yes why on earth did we not take a TE in the 3rd I liked the first 2 picks but prognosticators got this Frostee guy going much much later. there is no need to be reaching for other positions when there is a gaping hole at TE.

I have never really questioned Lewis at the draft before but so far that 3rd round pick is mind-boggingly frustrating.

guess we'll have to snag a TE in the 4th?

This is a terrible pick, considering Watson was still on the board. I'm baffled. This guy is a 5th round pick at best. I'm speechless.

What a horrendous first day of the draft. All 3 picks are considered "reaches" by the scouting people and they bypassed people who could have helped this ball team. Has anyone reminded Marvin that his team has had one of the worst defenses in the NFL for the past 3 years.

Frostee Rucker was considered a late round and potentially undrafted end. Marvin has obviously been reading his own press clippings because he thinks he can whip anyone into shape. How embarrasing will it be when the Bengals cut their 3rd round draft pick from this year.

Drafting a pure CB in the first round seems silly when you have such a glaring need at Safety. Medieu Williams is injury prone and Dexter Jackson is considered a 2nd tier player. There were studs available (Jimmy Williams) that would have made better sense. Who is going to stop the run??

The 2nd round OT pick is obviously a leverage ploy to pressure the unsigned lineman in at a lower cost. A very Mike Brown approach. The Whitworth kid was listed as a 3rd to 4th round pick and there were still 1st round quality tight ends on the board. All you do now is alienate Willie Anderson because he knows he is on his way out. TE Leonard Pope was perfect for this team and was actually forcasted by many to go to the Bengals in the first round. They could have had him in the second. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!

I couldn't agree more. And to think - I was so close to becoming a Bengals fan.

I just find it funny how everyone seems to know exactly what ML should have drafted. Are you guys in the war room? It's easy to sit here and judge when you're not there. Look, ML had his own board. Does he care what the coiffed Mel Kiper has to say? Is he a football coach or scout? No! Just because Mel Kiper said he's a reach doesn't mean that ML and his coaching staff reached according to their board. People in this city are some of the whiniest and most narrow minded people I've ever seen. I'm born and bred Cincinnatian, but how about sounding like you've done your homework once in a while and not just listened to the supposed draft gurus for your information!
