Agent: Bengals agree with WR Chatman

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

A day after they let Kevin Walter go, the Bengals agreed to terms on a two-year contract with another wide receiver.

Antonio Chatman, who caught 49 passes for the Packers last season, including eight against the Bengals, reached agreement Sunday on a two-year deal with the Bengals, agent Mark Mersel said.

The contract will be signed Monday.

"There are lots of incentives, things like punt returns," said Mersel, who declined to reveal financial figures until the contract is signed.

Chatman, who caught 68 passes in two seasons (1999 and 2000) with the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, also has played two seasons in the Arena League. He has 71 NFL receptions.

"He’s a true slot receiver, a solid No. 3 or No. 4," said Mersel, who relayed that Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski is excited about the acquisition.

"Bratkowski sees him as a new weapon," Mersel said. "They have those big receivers outside. He gives them a slot man who’s not afraid to go over the middle and make the tough catch."

The Bengals announced Saturday that they were not exercising their option to match the offer sheet Walter signed as a restricted free agent with the Houston Texans. Walter signed for four years for $6.4 million.

The Bengals on Sunday also confirmed the free agent visits by quarterback Brian Griese and defensive tackle Lional Dalton, a nine-year NFL veteran who played in all 32 possible games the past two seasons with the Chiefs.

Dalton, who is 6-foot-1, 315 pounds, broke into the NFL in 1998 with the Baltimore Ravens and played for four seasons with Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis, now Bengals coach.

What about Lavar Arrington? I heard he was in town today but no report here.

Don't bother posting questions. I don't think he reads them. Let alone, replies back.
Anyways, I didn't hear that he was in town today but, I read in numerous sources including NFL Total Access, Dayton News, and Akron News (I think) that the Bengals are highly interested and Lavar is highly wanting to come to Cinci. He is currentely being pursued by Giants. But from what I can tell he is visiting with teams with money. If he can't find a big contract, he will find his way into Cincinnati.

I've asked several people about the Bengals possibly signing LaVar and got mixed reactions.

I personally think it would be a great move. The Bengals are linebacker-heavy, especially if Pollack stays at OLB. But, LaVar could be a top five linebacker in the league. Odell and LaVar together would be pretty scary.

LaVar also had his best year when Marvin was defensive coordinator at Washington.

The situation is a lot like when the Bengals traded for Deltha O'Neal. For whatever reason, the Redskins have sort-of given up on LaVar, in the prime of his career. If Marvin could motivate LaVar to play, the way he motivated Deltha, the Bengals' defense would be significantly improved next year.

Nevertheless, I think the Bengals are definitely down-playing their true interest in LaVar, perhaps in an effort to keep his price-tag down.

It definitely sounds like LaVar needs to be in the right scheme, maybe it will happen. That O'Neal trade was genius.

The other open item is do they go after a CB in the draft, a DT, even a journeyman keeps them treading water after they let one go with Clemons.

And Chatman, most definitely a new weapon, on returns and in the slot where they needed one - the guy Warrick was supposed to be.

Very encouraging is attracting good talent to join which is a long-term benefit of making the playoffs.

I am feeling alright about this team as they face the future, deeper into the playoffs, and a good draft could put them over the top. They have established a type of play, a system and the respect is sitting in the right places.
