Elias and NFL: Bengals eliminated

The Bengals are officially out of playoff contention, Elias Sports Bureau has told the NFL. The league relayed the information to Bengals public relations director Jack Brennan.

The NFL has confirmed in a press release that the Bengals are eliminated.

The Bengals are 5-8 and headed to San Francisco for a game Saturday night on a short week.

The Bengals will try to win two games in a row for the first time this season.

Since losing three in a row to end the 2006 season, the Bengals are 5-11 in what amounts to a full, 16-game NFL season.

On the injury front, head coach Marvin Lewis said tight end Reggie Kelly and linebacker Landon Johnson both suffered ankle injuries against the Rams but downplayed the seriousness of both of them.

Safety Madieu Williams (thigh contusion) will be questionable, Lewis said. Williams was inactive against the Rams, and Lewis said rookie safeties Marvin White and Chinedum Ndukwe played well in splitting the snaps.

Right tackle Willie Anderson, who has been inactive seven games in a row, will try to make another attempt to play this week, Lewis said.

Mark--- two questions... Will Willie Anderson play again? Not just this season but ever?

Why has Frostee Rucker not been active the past four or five weeks?

Another bust!

Its somewhat pedantic but if the Bengals were to finish 3-0 and the browns 0-3 why would the browns get the nod over the bengals?

The rules are:

Two Clubs

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).

If the bengals went 3-0 that would include them beating the browns meaning the bengals/browns series would be 1-1 - Result: TIE

2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.

If (bengals 3-0, browns 0-3) the Bengals would be 3-3 in the division, having beaten the ravens twice and the browns once. The browns would have the exact same record, beating the ravens twice and the bengals once - Result: TIE

3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.

Common Games (outside of division, which has already proven equal):
Seatle ( Bengals L @ Seatle, Browns W @ Cleveland )
New England ( Both Lost )
Jets ( Both Won )
Saint Louis ( Both Won )
Buffalo ( Bengals Lost, if browns go 0-3 Browns Lost )
Arizona ( Both Lost )
San Francisco ( If Bengals are 3-0, Browns 0-3, that means Bengals Won and Browns Lost )
Meaning, in the hypothetical scenario, Result - TIE

4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

Bengals 6-6 Browns 6-6

5. Strength of victory.

This is where the NFL is burning the Bengals. I Guess they are saying that no matter what the bengals do in the next 3 games, they're not going to outdo the browns thrilling 7 point victory over St. Louis (vs Bengals 9 point) or the 3 point home win vs Seatle (vs the 3 point away loss for the bengals) Unless they actually call this a tie in which case you fall to rule 6:

6. Strength of schedule.

Which while they may have some argument here, its really impossible to say until the season is over.

Unless I am wrong, I think the NFL is showing their hand that Goddell pretty much hates the Bengals and will take the browns no matter what.

All of this is probably a moot argument as the likelyness of the Bengals going 3-0 while the Browns go 0-3 is very very slim. Still, they shouldn't put the slug in the horse until it stops kicking.

Another bust? Hes played well when given the chance to play. He hasn't been listed on any of the injury reports lately so Im guessing its the coaches not letting him play.

In the offseason the Bengals will say they don't have anyone to replace Justin Smith and end up re-signing him again for more money than hes worth.

I guess I overthought the whole matter, because after I posted that I realized that in order for the Browns to go 0-3 the Bills have to beat them, which would give the Bills the wildcard over the Browns or the Bengals. My Bad. So they are eliminated. So we should be playing for a higher draft pick and go 0-3 in the next 3 games.

I hate the way Bengals.com is giving credit for how well the defense is doing. Never ranked higher then 28 under CB I am afriad that we have another season with. So wait until 2009 if Chuck is back. Go Browns and Colts!!!

Wow, what do you know, the Bengals are out of it again as they have been almost all of my adult life. Thanks for another dissappointing season; I can't wait to see how much my tickets go up in price this year!

The reason you put the slug in the Horse is to stop the suffering or at least to stop the kicking animal from injuring an innocent bystander (which is what us FANS are) while they stand around HOPING for a SNOWBALLS chance in H*LL to come to fruition.

Ok, I know the BENGALS are the one that KILLED US but, I for one thank Roger Goodell for putting us out of our misery!

Now that post-season hopes are gone, let's be productive with the rest of the season and give some of the young guys some PT! Rucker, White, Dorsey, Chinney...let's give them some experience to make them better for next year.

Yeah I agree that the comments made about the Bengals defense are a little over blown.. Yes they only gave up 3 offensive points to St. Louis, who happened to be starting a bad QB making his first ever start on a very wet day.. They also played the Steelers in horrible conditions and played ok for the most part, but not dominant..

Yes they are playing a little better now that some players are healthy, and some have more experience, but I would not classify them as anything good.

AGGRAZEL,
Here is why,
Best Bengal record can be is 8 wins
Jacksonville has 9 now, that is one wild card gone.
If the Browns go 0-3 down the strecth that would include a loss to Buffalo who is currently at 7-6. That puts Buffalo at 8 wins, same as Bengals, tie-breaker goes to Bills via head to head.

So if the Bengals go 3-0 and the Browns go 0-3 the nod does not go to the Browns, it goes to the Bills.

I don't agree with the severity of the punishment for Odell Thurman, however, he got himself in the position he is in. Did Roger Goodell buy him the alcohol? Did Roger force Odell to do the things he did? No. People need to take responsiblity for their actions. Quit playing the blame game.

Aggrazel...

Strength of Victory isn't about point differential. It's the combined record of opposing teams a team has defeated.

2007's signature Bengals moment was when, a day after the Bengals won, and yet were so bad prior they still were eliminated from the playoffs in week 13, they managed to get eliminated before the Vickless Falcons.

BEFORE the Falcons, with their Pro-Bowl Quarterback out for the year due on the Injured Pit-Bull Reserve List...

Bengals coaches should quit out of embarrassment and never go near another football field. What a shame our nadsless owner doesn't have the brains or spine to just completely clean house and fire every coach on the entire team.

THAT would be a good FIRST STEP towards winning, because these guys are so bad they can't even guide a more talented team BY FAR than the Falcons to playing a meaningful game with a quarter of the season remaining (before the Rams game the Bengals had 4 to play and no way to make the playoffs if the Bills beat the winless Miami Dolphins--who will EASILY BEAT CINCY this season to avoid 0-16...

Take that to the bank. This is the worst Bengals coaching staff EVER.

PATHETIC!

Mike Brown is a shy, quiet man. He is soft spoken and humble. The most important things in his life are 1. His family, 2. His faith in God, 3. His business. He does not take risks. He prefers sound safe investments. He would rather own real estate than stocks. He does not gamble. He is a patient man who is always optimistic that the choices he made were the right ones. He does not enjoy firing people and will often look at the good of someone rather than the bad. His biggest goal for the Bengal’s is to leave a healthy and profitable enterprise over to his children and their family. He will only invest in the Bengal’s if he is guaranteed a return on his investment. He will not hire someone who may take away power over the Bengal’s from his family. He is very proud and grateful for his father. He is unknown outside of Cincinnati and football. You will never see Mike Brown doing commercial endorsements or standing on the sidelines during a game. You will not see him talk to the media very much. He stands in the shadows of the NFL owners and prefers not to hob knob with socialites. He is a good man, a good father, a good husband and a good friend. God Bless and Merry Christmas

Thats great I'm sure Mike Brown is a swell fellow but he's a horrible NFL owner and is killing this city's pride in our franchise. Maybe his kids don't care but the rest of us do.

Then again he's already proven he cares squat for this city, hence the bullying threatening to move the team stadium deal making us pay for his luxury boxes while we can't keep cops on the street.

So he's a swell guy who hates cincinnati, I get that. You can't help but feel ire if like me, you actually love this town for some reason.

ANON 9:10

You said, "He (Mike Brown) will not hire someone who may take away power over the Bengal’s from his family."

Hiring someone to perform their job doesn't mean giving them ownership. Look at the Irsays in Indianapolis and the Rooneys in Pittsburgh.

With fans like this defend the inept ownership, this team will NEVER take the necessary steps to change the culture within the organization.

So keep on drinking the kool-aid. Hope for a playoff season once every twenty years. Spend your money on a team that refuses to invest itself.

Who's the more foolish: The fool, or the fool who follows him?
