Brown confirms conversation with Goodell

The Associated Press has reported that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is trying to end the Cincinnati Bengals' continuing problems with the law. Goodell called Bengals president Mike Brown on Monday to offer his help. Eight Bengals players have been arrested this year -- three since the commissioner visited with the team Sept. 20.

Brown, through spokesman Jack Brennan, confirmed the conversation but said it was not appropriate for him to discuss it publicly.

"Obviously, when you have incidents that don't reflect well on the National Football League, you have to deal with that aggressively," Goodell said Tuesday. "Our players and coaches are seen at a higher level by the public."

The commissioner asked Brown if there were anything he could do but also sent the message that the Bengals had to adjust their actions.

Last weekend, the Bengals returned to the police blotter when cornerback Deltha O'Neal was arrested on a DUI charge, just six days after rookie receiver Reggie McNeal was charged with resisting arrest outside a Houston night club.

Just what are they allowed to do? I thought the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the League's Disciplinary policy pretty much took things out of the individual team's hands.

It seems like all they are left with is education and/or counseling.

Does Marvin Lewis need to say everyday to the players "Don't drink and drive." I don't like the DUIs by Steinbach and O'Neal but they semm to otherwise be good citizens.

I'm more concerned about the behavior of some of the draft picks the last 2 years. Thurman, McNeal, Henry, Rucker and Nicholson all fall in that category. I think the question needs to be what steps are the Bengals taking prior to draft day in investigating possible draft choices. The organization needs to be more proactive on this front.

The CBA says you can not cut a player for non performance issues. It DOES NOT say you have to let them dress on Sunday. If Marvin is serious about character why was Reggie McNeal in uniform Sunday?

Off the topic here
Anyone know where you can get the radio broadcast from previous Bengals games? Sometimes i get it from the 1530 podcasts, but they only have a few plays.
Is there somewhere else that it is available?

Not a single Bengal has been CONVICTED of DUI, only charged. If they are not found guilty then it should not be an issue. Or did the Soviets really win the cold war?

I am angry at the treatment of Odell Thurman, especially its severity and the virtual absence of any justification for what amounts to two years ripped out of a young man's career.I guess we need to have blind faith in the wisdom of the NFL !?#* RD
