Mark Curnutte offers the latest on the Cincinnati Bengals


Mark Curnutte started covering the Bengals and the NFL for The Enquirer in 2000. He previously wrote about urban affairs and other social issues for the Enquirer. He won the prestigious 1994 Unity Award from Lincoln University (Missouri) for "A Polite Silence," a seven-day series about race relations in Greater Cincinnati. He also has worked as an assistant features editor and features writer at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. Curnutte is second vice president and a three-year board member of the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA). He is a 1984 Miami University graduate.

Bengals drive 69 yards, 14 plays for TD, lead 7-0

CLEVELAND -- Rudi Johnson ran into the end zone from the 1-foot line to give the Benga inls a 7-0 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter. He ran right behind right tackle Willie Anderson, who was flanked outside by tackle-eligible Scott Kooistra and tight end Reggie Kelly. Browns coach Romeo Crennel unsuccessfully challenged the call.

Johnson ran five times for 29 yards on the drive. Kelly had two receptions for 21 yards, including a diving 14-yard grab that set the Bengals up at the Cleveland 5.

The touchdown is Johnson's eighth of the season and his seventh in the past five games, including today.

The drive took 5:53.
